What is this?

Aesculus glabra, commonly known as Ohio buckeye, is a species of tree in the soapberry family (Sapindaceae) native to North America. Willd. Its natural range is primarily in the Midwestern and lower Great Plains regions of the United States, extending southeast into the geological Black Belt of Alabama and Mississippi.

Best guess is yellow buckeye. I would need to see flowers/leaves to tell for sure.
The ones I grew up with in Ohio have spiny pods, and according to the Ohioans, all of the others are "horse chestnuts", but that is not correct.

Isn't there something about having one in your pocket for good luck?

Theee Ohio State.

Ridiculous.

There is. It's like that bb gun too. The juice will put yer eye out. Or so I was told all my life.
I was always told that one side of a buckeye was poisonous and the other was not, so you should never eat one. But squirrels could tell which side was safe to eat. (People told kids a lot of crap in those days.) I never believed it. My cousin offered as proof the fact (so he said) that he had seen many half-eaten buckeyes in the woods, proving that the squirrels had eaten only the safe half. I said that the squirrels had intended to eat the whole thing but got sick halfway through and crawled off to die without finishing it, implying that squirrels were stupid but I was not.

I'd have been screwed. They look like chestnuts and I'd have probably eaten one.

These are Scarlet Buckeyes from a tree on my list. They have pretty flowers. I am not sure how large the tree grows.
