What types of checks are the ATF running that takes almost a year to process? Is there a place the explains the process they follow?

A majority of the wait has nothing to do with any actual work. Paper forms sit in boxes, eForms just wait their turn. The BGC can sometimes be a delay, but rarely is the problem.

My understanding is that's it's basically just a NICs check and the paperwork review is what drags on.

Correct. Just an FBI NICS background check. Interestingly enough I had a can in the queue and I contacted the office of one of our illustrious Senators to investigate why it was taking so damn long at the 10 month mark. Long story short & the point is, my "FBI NICS" check was completed on 5/27 which was 11 months after my check was cashed by the ATF but I did not get the call for pickup from the FFL until August 11, a full 13 month wait.

So even after successful approval it still sat on a desk at the ATF for 3 months doing nothing. Just sharing.

I love bureaucrats.

The delay is intentional. All government entities play the game of “needing more staff”. The better department heads will actually show a slight increase in productivity after getting more staff just to show that more staff has a positive impact.

Oh yeah, I just went to onslow beach (camp lejeune NC) and my dad sponsored me for a pass so I could drive in and out of the gate on my own. Pass was free, including the background check and only took 10 minutes.

I think that's more dangerous than a hushing device... But what do I know.

I feel you on this 100%, Ive done work on every mil base in SC, have done design for 3 letter organizations in the state of SC, and do work on nuclear sites in SC/GA.

All of these checks passed quickly and easily. But heaven forbid my rifles are slightly less loud 🤣.

The actual processing time is about 14 minutes. The rest of the time is spent with the forms sitting in boxes in the hallway, down aisles, or in a E-Processing queue. I remember reading an article from the American Silencer Association (now "suppressor" ) which posted an article about a tour the ASA leadership got . This was about 12 yrs or so ago. There was a great shot of all the cardboard boxes piled everywhere.

There's no actual incentive to excel . Imagine if say, the boss said "I'll pay $150 extra per month if you meet this productivity goal without increasing the error rate". You might get some takers.

But there is no such incentive.

And the $200 just goes to the Treasury

I don't believe in the process but the ATF is just getting pennies on the dollar for the application they are processing lol.

Nor is there a disincentive.

This thread is making me not feel optimistic about my e-form turn around time. Not that I was optimistic, just less so now. Dang it.

I waited 13 months as well for my can. Unacceptable IMHO

A buddy of mine filed paper and he waited 14 months. That's just wrong.

The entire thing seems to be some "manager" or political entity towards the top of the system from the start. Decided to make it so annoying to go through the process that in their mind citizens would decide not to go through the hassle.. If it onerous to a citizen to ensure/claim their rights.....

Then it becomes a "standard timeframe". Then it becomes "if only my department has more funding" we could do our job as we are required to.

"But due to a lack of funding, we can't do whatever job" we exist to do.

If only "we had MORE money, we could better evaluate every single transgression a citizen who asks permission of us to exercise a right we now control". " To ensure the "safety" of the public.....
