Tomorrow is Memorial Day 2020, and this year, it happens to fall on my birthday. I'll be 38 tomorrow.

Usually on Memorial Day I drink beer all day, get a little sloppy, text/call some of the guys I served with, and reminisce about our mutual friends that got killed in the sand box.

Then I have a good cry and wake up the next day ready to get back to life and work and family. I feel like it's the one day each year where it's ok to get drunk, remember, and let out some sadness.

I was just wondering how other vets deal with Memorial Day.

Man, I have the utmost respect for you and all your kind who have served our country. Thank you for your service, and I do my best to be the kind of American worth fighting for. I’ve got a lot of family connections to the military...dad...mom....both brothers. A nephew that died. Father-in-law, and a cousin that died in Vietnam.

Happy birthday sir!

FYI, all of those things, or any combination of them, are acceptable any day.
My brother did his best to keep too much in and it wound up contributing to his early death.
I mean, I wouldn't go getting sloppy drunk every day, because that's really what got him... but you know what i'm trying to say.

I hear you. Sounds like everything is good in moderation, even mourning...

Set out our US Flag with the black ribbon (done).

Think about my father: USAF 1953-73 (Korea '53; Thailand '64; Vietnam '67-8). (in progress)

I don't know ... maybe get lucky and my son (1-7 CAV) will call. (not putting bank on it!!)

A day for tribute to those who served and those that died. I myself did not have the chance to serve, but I often think of my father on this day. Served during WWII on the USS Bunker Hill CV-17. Hit by 2 kamikazi fighters at the same time. Over 350 died in a matter of minutes. Killed everyone he served with for 3 years. If he had not left for OCS the week before, I would not be here. RIP every one of them.

I’m curious, how many runs are there in an average 24 hours?
It all depends . Pre #Rona my truck averaged 1750 calls a year. Now that the state changed the protocols we are riding less medical calls so its less. Obvisouly there are trucks who ride more( my last assignment we rode about 2200 a year) Other places have engines that ride 4500-5000 calls per year and then the other end of the spectrum you have outlying stations that might ride 500-700 a year.

As a vet, I’ll have a drink or two for those we lost and tell stories of them. One of the great ones took pride in telling a story about calling my girlfriend one night and telling her how I’d gotten arrested at the strip club. I was actually on duty and had no access to a phone. He knew that, took full advantage and seized the opportunity to mess with me. It worked. She was fit for war when she caught up with me and assumed everything I told her about being on duty was a lie. Until Oppy started cracking up and couldn’t hold it anymore.

Yep, bout the same without the alcohol, I have kids and wife here.

I speak their names out loud to myself, seems to help me remember and make peace. Then I get on with stuff, cause I know thats what they'd do.
