I kinda hope this is a dumb question, but why can’t I find a place to talk about ranges or finding a good gun club?

I moved here a few months ago and can Google, but where should I post to find out about which ranges are best, or where I can go to work out of a holster or set up more defensive drills than the typical vanilla ranges will allow?

Thank you for asking this. I'd love to know as well
I'm new, so I might be missing something, though.

Most people just ask it in Off Topic. Or in whatever section relates to the type of firearm they want to shoot. Or in meetups.

CCGCI is a great (reasonably priced) range located in Burlington, NC. Details on their web site below:
You a member there? $200 app fee. Don't see where it lists annual dues. Same $?

And why do all these places require NRA membership? No options for those associations that actually pretend to support the 2A?

Personally I'd like to see a sub fourm for ranges. Members could arrange meetups or bringing guests to private ranges to see if they want to join. Limited to one thread per range.
Agreed. I think it would also be cool to have a way to meet people with private ranges on their land for camaraderie. No one wants to deal with garbage RSOs or drive 30-60min to a range when you can drive down the road and meet a local forum member and have a much better time.

Yes, I am. It's 175.00 per year to maintain the membership.
My biggest hesitation to join was the NRA clause/requirement. (I guess) I get the thinking behind it, but also wish there were other 2A organizational support options.

I have been a member down at Woody's for several years and I love it. I do not get to visit more than a few times a year, but it is a fantastic range. You can shoot out to 550 yards if you follow Damon's rules, and out to 1000 depending upon you qualifying with Damon. He is a clear communicator and there will be little doubt about what he expects. That being said, it is a low restrictions range for the most part. I would recommend it to anyone whom wishes to shoot tactical/self Defense or competition set ups.

Anybody know of ranges near Raleigh area that go past 100 yards?

Frontline Defense in Warrenton NC has a 550 yd range that is open to the public. Woody’s in New Hill does to but it is private

I was told that its an insurance policy requirement. NRA sells insurance for private ranges, and require all range members be NRA members, they are most often the cheapest or sometimes the only option.

Makes sense. If they're the only ones selling the insurance, then require all to be members, more $ for them.

I just wish they'd spend more $$ on fighting for us than buying more suits and houses for Wayne

Possibly. I work in a building with an insurance company and I asked an agent how much it would cost to insure a range as I would like my own someday. She didn't know at the time, but a week or two later she came back to me because someone wanted a quote worked up. He had about 18a and about five lanes and he was going to teach land navigation courses as well. The quote came out to be a little under $400/m.

Count me as interested in a Ranges section. I've had questions a few times and dropped them somewhere, but it'd be good to have a reference as well. @BigWaylon any hope of that ever happening?

As far as the NRA, I've asked a couple ranges before and price aside, it's hard to get them insured in the current climate, NRA is one of the few options but they require (I think) approx 90% of range members be NRA members for their policy. It's a racket, but I guess pay to play. Otherwise agree, it's put me off...

I used to belong to Buckhorn Gun Club in Efland. They have the pesky NRA membership rule, but it was inexpensive, and the only rule they really had was to not shoot anyone. Thinking about reapplying. There's nothing really local to Durham.

The NRA is nothing more than a recognized "brand" at best. It does not provide or sell range insurance per say. They offer insurance that they broker through a large commercial provider.

That provider is Lockton Affinity. Call Lockton Affinity directly and get a quote. I have done this on numerous occasions for commercial and home ranges.

@thecooldude In Buncombe Co. there is On Target ( 🤮 ) in Asheville. There is Rex's in Hendersonville and another in Brevard. All are meh shooting ranges.

There is also the Asheville Rifle and Pistol Club. This place especially blows if you want to do any drill, draw from your holster, or shoot more than one bullet per second.

If you want to be able to work from a holster and do drills, VOD in Old Fort is the only way to go.

Big Ivy up in Burnsville is another option.

Anyone mention North State Shooting Club? It’s at Camp Butner just north of Butner, NC. They host weekend competition- Highpower XTC, Fullbore, Long Range, F-class, etc. It’s a 1000yd KD range with nice grass berms every 100yd, but no cover from the weather so plan accordingly. Parking is very close to yard lines. Great group of folks that are always ready to help someone new to the range. Awesome juniors program too

Big Ivy Silas Branch is a super nice facility. I've only been a handful of times but it's the only place I know of in western NC where you can shoot 1,000yd. They have membership options but it's not required.

200yd Rifle range, several pistol bays, tactical range with falling/moving steel, trap/skeet field, and long range where you shoot across the valley. Here's one of my trips out there where I shot to 500 or so with old junk.

Coastal Carolina Rifle Club has access to the USMC ranges for those of you who are retired or active duty military. For civilians a background check is required. High Power and F Class.

Would this include Paris Island Ranges?
I doubt it. CCRC has some form of agreement with the USMC, as I presume Northstate Shooting Club has with NCNG at Butner. They only authorize access for formal sanctioned matches, not general target practice. No screwing around.

NSSC has a similar arrangement. They hold NRA or formal club matches typically on the weekends with an informal practice on fridays. They are in the process of switching to shot marker targets so the matches move at a good pace.

most of them are insured through the NRA insurance programs
