I ordered a Walnut replacement stock for my Marlin mod 70 from Numrich and this is what they sent.....

I would expect to touch up a few flat tops and a few over runs but, DAYUM. I don't know where to start!! Good thing they sent me the wrong stock, maybe the next one is better..
I know they don't make these but can't believe they would accept this let alone let it back out the door.

Garbage in, Garbage out.

Nobody looks , nor cares until there's a complaint. Then maybe barely cares.

Good lord. I've rechased the checking on 50 year old shotguns that wasn't that flat.

Looks better than the walnut they sent me. Moldy, split/shake. Wtf, over? They refunded my money & sent me a birch stock that was cosmetically GTG, but needed quite a bit of sanding the barrel channel to seat the action, let alone float the barrel.

Seems to me, most of their Marlin stocks seem to be factory 2nds.

For the last few years, the "checkered" marlin stocks, if you can call them that, have had this horrible pressed in checkering. And I've seen a lot of older ones with real checkering that looked exactly like the stock in your photo. I'd say that's about typical for a marlin.

I'm not an expert but do know a bit about wood. That pattern was pressed, right?

Hey, I am left handed and act like a monkey most of the time, so am pretty offended. Usually have the DTs too, so I jiggle a lot trying to get the stock lined up in the press. Gives it that great mirage image.

So, one of you says embossed and one says hand-carved. What made me guess pressed (I assumed with heat) is that the grain appears scorched. Maybe that's just the photos.

I was in a furniture factory in Bosnia that has craftsmen capable of doing this work right. It really is something to watch.

To the OP...is the stock labeled anywhere with the country of origin? Are we sure that's actually Walnut?

Looks like another one of them 12-beer jobs except this one step one is 'drink all the beer'.

Do you know the proper response for when someone shows you their ugly as hell baby? "Yes sir/mam, that a baby right there, sure is!"

Well...."Yes sir, that's a stock right there, sure is!"

I would wholeheartedly agree and add that there had to be a shot between beers...

Maybe so, but have you ever seen an ugly puppy?? I haven't....

Let me think about that a moment.

I've spent a ton of money at Gun Parts/Numrich over the years and have YET to receive anything from them that doesn't need major "fitting" in order to make it work. None of their parts have been "drop in" or "plug & play"...particularly their wood products. I only use them as a last resort when no other option is available.
I guess the only thing that I'm impressed with is the catalog and it's exploded parts drawings, but since Al Gore invented the internet, even THAT'S not that great.
