So, I gots a hankerin' for a Microtech that I would like to put into the EDC rotation. This is my first foray into the OTF world. A buddy at work has several and he said he'd be willing to part with one. I do plan on carrying it as I have no need for a collectable. Any advice would be appreciated as what to expect.

I carry a Microtech DOC every day. It's a heavy duty side opener. I've owned several of the OTF models, but I never could justify carrying one for everyday use. My opinion only, if the toughest thing you're going to do with a knife is open the occasional envelope, an OTF would work fine for you, but if you use a knife as a tool, they're a little fragile for that.

Did I miss a law change on the carrying of automatic knives in NC?

The gray area is the fact they are still "spring assisted" except the assist is like 99% instead of 100% (illegal).

Probably depends more where you live and if you have some a-hole sheriff (or if you like proving points in court).

"Section 14-269 does not mention automatic knives directly, but it clearly states that knives opened with a ā€œspring actionā€ are not ordinary pocket knives for purposes of the law. Therefore, concealed carry of automatic knives in North Carolina is not recommended."

A guy I work with got on a Microtech kick last year and bought three or four. All of them had various issues. One major annoyance he had was that fasteners would become loose and as they were all proprietary, he had no way to tighten them up. I think all of them have been back to Microtech for warranty work. His experience has definitely put me off Microtech especially considering the price. But there is that cool factor...

I have a bunch of coworkers who live in the UK. Every few months, they come to Durham for meetings. When they are here, I always go out to dinner with them and bring a different knife each time to show off.

THEY LOVE SEEING MY KNIVES. (I'm also concealed carrying, but i don't tell them about my ccw because I don't want their heads to explode. )

Anyway, last time they came I carried my Microtech Ultratech. It was a big hit. It got passed around the table several times at dinner. They all wanted to pop it out and back in.

Anyway, one of them wanted to know if the spring was powerful enough to shoot the blade through his hand. Luckily, I was able to get it away from the drunk Irishman before he stabbed himself.

Then, I held up a paper napkin and pressed the button. It wasn't even strong enough to go through a napkin. The napkin knocked the blade off the track. It was easy to reset though.

My feeling is. They are really cool. Fun to play with. But mine has failed on a number of occasions, so I do not trust it for daily carry. It's not 100% reliable. (But then again, if I ever do need to defend myself, I'm not going to be reaching for a knife. )

It seems that they have a "cool factor", but I don't think it's an edc. I can't justify that much $ for a look pretty, so I think I'll keep on with my trusty Spyderco for now.

I have a micro tech socom elite. I carry it all the time. beat the shit out of it, cut whatever, pry coins out of vending machines. it's a good knife. I got mine super cheap, I wouldnt pay what they ask for them. but hey I am a cheapskate.

Yes, have carried my Microtech Scarab, that Tony gave me as a going away gift the second time I went to Iraq (contractor) back in 2008. Have carried it daily ever since.
Take it apart for clean and lube occasionally. Best blade Iā€™ve had since my old Buck folding hunter from the 70ā€™s.
Thank you Tony
