Who knew the bicycles would all be sold out?

That’s Academy Sports in Apex. I heard Dicks was the same.
So next we stopped in All Star Cycles in The Containment Area, and when I asked for median priced hybrid bikes they just shook their heads and put us on the waiting list to be notified.
Started looking at this Trek, but it’s a new offering and not available yet. Might go to their store and get on the list.

    https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/...l-sport-bikes/dual-sport/dual-sport1/p/32885/

First toilet paper, then ammo and reloading supplies, now bicycles. Who knew?

Fitness equipment in general is in high demand with most gyms being closed.

Check some of the local stores, that's where we I found my son's. I paid more than I wanted but he got a really nice bike and they had it in stock.

A coworker of mine also had the same issue trying to find a bicycle recently. Wound up paying an arm and a leg for a used one in Apex.

My son said he wanted to keep it to around $500. All Star bike shop in Cary told me it would be around $600 to get something worthwhile. I think that new Trek offering is $550. The last adult sized bike I bought was for my oldest son maybe ten years ago. It had bells and whistles, and seemed great for the $250 I paid for it, but it came to pieces pretty quick after regular use, so his younger brother figured he’d buy something better this time.

Friend owns a bike shop, says he is covered up with bikes needing repairs and the only ones he has for sale are still in boxes waiting to be built.

This could be my retirement job (if I wanted one). I put bikes together for Sears a couple of Christmases back in the day in high school.

If people REALLY wanted exercise, they'd buy a 20 lb bike from WalMart.

I paid $400 for a freestyle BMX bike, no bells or whistles about as plain as you can get. But the store I bought it from will do free tune ups for the time we own the bike and they highly recommended it at that price point.

This is why I’d like to stick with a local bike shop if I can. The last one I bought ten years ago was cheap, and crap just started breaking, and they fixed a lot of it gratis.

This next one will be on my younger son’s dime since he’s grown and has some of his own "walking around money" now.

The nice local shop here seemed full of bikes, but I am guessing it was high end stuff, being in The Containment Area where everyone will be in the Tour De France next year.

I was walking through Walmart yesterday and noticed they didn't have any bikes. Didn't think much of it. Figured they were moving stuff around or something...

He's lucky to have that; the local shop I went to last week didn't have ANY new bikes for sale, but the whole floor was covered in bikes being repaired so people could ride.

AND outdoor trampolines are sold out everywhere! I've been trying to find one for my kids, calling walmarts and sporting goods stores in Apex, Greensboro, Raleigh, and Durham. I've been trying for 2 months and still haven't found one.

And, the Walmart in Siler City took all their guns out of the display case. I asked the employee if they sold out of guns. He said, "No, we still have them but we're not allowed to sell them until covid goes away. "

Fuji and Trek are not going to sell police bikes to PD's anymore because the police use them as weapons against the BLM idiots.

Another weird one as been inflatable swimming pools. I havent checked this week, but a week ago we couldnt find a decent sized inflatable pool for the kids anywhere in the Triad. None at walmarts, Dollar Generals, anywhere.

I think you mean 30, 20 is pretty light. And they have raided WM. Nothing over a 18" at my local, mostly 16".

Even odd things like 26+" BMX style bikes are sold out online. Thankfully I got a sweet deal on one here.

Bike rack pickings are getting slim too.

26” tubes are sold out most everywhere too and there are slim pickings for tires.

I'd guess disruption to the China supply chain rather than a sudden embrace of physical activity by the Average Joe

Likely a deadly combination of the two. Gyms close and people suddenly have loads more free time at the same time that supply chain logistics are thrown totally out of whack from importers to distributors and retailers.

I think there has definitely been a surge in desire to get out and be active just based on the 100 or so bicycles in being repaired at the local bike store I went to two weeks ago.

Yes, seriously. I convinced a friend to sell her old carbon road bike that might only pull $300 normally, now likely $5-600.

A friend bought a new mountain bike a few weeks ago and $3k was the starting point of what was available. Now most of those are long gone.

......knowing my fellow Americans, this means there'll be thousands of lightly used bikes on Craigslist in a few months.

Exactly!! Great time to upgrade or snag a great deal on a lightly used bike. Late fall and spring will be good times.

I bought a backup MTB last week just because you can’t get parts right now.

I work at a trek store and it’s crazy in there. Unless you need a xs or xxl you aren’t going to find anything below 3k.

Not to mention we are also covered up with service. Soooo many wall mart bikes that people have had sitting under a tree for the past 10 years and they want them fixed up cheaply.

Try finding a 7 speed derailleur or shifter. Impossible. Even replacement wheels are unavailable.

I didn’t even think about that. Finding old 26” and <8/9sp parts has to be tough.

He will be L/XL. 2X is a huge bike. You need to be like 6-5 to even get the seat post in the right position.

I’ll be back in there Thursday. PM me and I’ll see what we have in the pipeline. What is he looking for? Trail? Hybrid? Dual sport?

Hybrid, but I think I might be a long way from your store. We are closest to the one in Cary 30 minutes from us.

I think he/we like the new Dual Sport 1 coming out, but at that price point I imagine they will be extremely difficult to find, once available.
