Why is there a shortage of canning jars and lids?

I’ve been having some success at Carli C’s. Been finding mostly 1/2 Gallon but have picked up quart jars on occasion. Walmart has a shit load of pints and on occasion qts, mostly regular mouth. It’s hit and miss on wide mouth which is what I prefer. Naturally prices are up.
 
Don't forget all the twee Pinterest craft crap where people toss a string of battery leds in a canning jar and call it art.
 
All the grocery & hardware stores around here have loads of em. 'Course, we're very rural & the area's "economically disadvantaged", so that's probably why stores here stock em year round.
 
Local farm and garden had a pile of quart jars yesterday.......$20 a dozen 😳. Last batch I needed only place I could find them was Dollar General $5 for a four pack.
 
Walmart in Fuquay Varina had a shelf full last week and they were still there 2 days later. Holly Springs Walmart had them too. I didn’t know there was still a shortage.
 
Agri Supply in Garner had several sets of jars/ rings/ lids 2 days ago also.

Jars haven’t been hard, in fact I just graduated from quarts to half gallons for pickled eggs, but have not seen a box of lids in a long time.
 
They are $20 a dozen up here too. They are available but your gonna pay.....like everything else.

Yep, there are every bit equal to or better than Ball. I ordered 300 more wides and 360 more regular and got them Wednesday.

I have not seen any in the three walmarts we frequent. Have not been this week though. I use alot of jars and prefer small mouth quarts.
 
Yeah, around here I can pick up all the cases of jars we want...

Its finding just the flats, the only consumable naturally. That seems impossible😞
 
Dollar General has Golden Harvest quarts for $10 and a pack of flats for $3 in St. Pauls. Plenty cases of flats but about 10 cases of jars left.

But because of the twee Pinterest crap Michael's has jars too. But everyone is focused on just the jars and forgetting the lids.

Kerr and Ball didn't have to sell out. But they did and now we're suffering for it.
 
It seems like every year people complain of jar shortages from April through October.

Stock up in the winter. They're everywhere and cheap.

We stocked up at target and Walmart.
 
I found some at Walmart a few weeks ago. Not my favorite place.
 
Walmarts around here are showing the Ball lids in stock for $2.97/12 with a limit of 6 boxes. Lids with rings are about $1 more.
 
Walmarts local to me still have lots of jars and lids. Every time I go I buy 4 or 5 packs of lids
