Wildlife Depredation - squirrels

Waiting for some leaves to drop and maybe I can see them better. Been a long time since I went squirrel hunting. I can't seem to catch them coming and going

I decided to put out a small Havahart trap I've had for years -- just to see if I could catch a couple of the remaining squirrels who have been trying to get into the house since they've been appearing only sporadically in the past week. In two days, I've caught two wrens in it -- or maybe the same wren twice. No squirrels. I ordered a better trap. 😂 But if you want to trap wrens, the Havahart will do the job for you.

Back to eternal vigilance with the .22 for the squirrels ...

i've noticed a drastic reduction in squirrel population around my place just from popping them with the bb gun every chance i get. Seems they don't like being hit and are content to hang out at the neighbors. Funny, stray cats tend to stay out of my yard too...

I have just declared war myself. Little bastards ate a hole in my soffit and are packing my wall with nuts.

I'll be on patrol with the 410 and bought a live animal trap. I have neighbors close enough that I would be nervous shooting a 22 but a shotgun would be ok as long as they aren't on my fence or roof.
They did this to my rear window, chewed the corner out and filled it with nuts.

I relocated 18 this summer.

When I was growing up, we had a neighbor behind us who used to trap squirrels and take them out to the country and turn them loose. When he finally moved away, he had caught nearly a thousand of them over the years. (I don't remember the exact number, but it was in the high 900s.)

Dad laughed when I told him that. "All he did was make room for more squirrels to move in!"

And I don't doubt it, either. I don't recall the actual squirrel population suffering at all by his trapping actions.

We had fruit trees, too...apple and apricot. And Mom probably didn't help matters any, as she used to put nuts out on the picnic table all the time for them, and her favorite was to put an "empty" peanut butter jar in the apple tree and watch the squirrels lick that bugger spotless!

I've had one out, using peanut butter, peanuts etc. Nothing. I think I am going to try some suet.

They are still there, but on the back side of the tree from you. Find the tree with all the pine cone/nut debris under it. Hunt those trees. Wear a hat when hunting. Toss the hat on the other side of the tree. The squirrel will shimmy around the tree to get away from the hat movement. Easy shot with a .22

Around here, at least for the past couple of days, they haven't been on any side of the trees. It happens. Weather conditions, temperature, whatever. Maybe tomorrow. :)
