Would be nice if search allowed short words

This is when I search for the what are you reading thread...

Search results for query: what are you reading

  1. The following words were not included in your search because they are too short, too long, or too common: what, are, you

I tried "what are you reading", but got the same thing.

I've found in general that the search feature is somewhat lacking.

I can search a word or phrase and nothing will come up at all...then make a second attempt with the SAME word or phrase and have threads appear.

I can search words or phrases I KNOW are correct for the thread(s) I'm looking for and not get anything at all no matter how many times I try. And then later I'll find the thread by other means (like it pops up on my alerts because someone posted on it) and I can see I never misspelled my search criteria.

Very frustrating at times.

To be fair...I do find what I'm looking for by searches a lot of the time.

Sometimes it’s easier to search for a word than a string of words, but limit it to titles only, or to a member if you remember who post it.

Searching for “reading”, with the box checked for titles only, finds that thread.

…but the Google/DDG option is also nice, and how I generally search ARF and here (after trying the search tool).

Search function on any xenforo or vbulletin site is dreadful. Practically useless. And that’s most all of them.

As @Sp00ks and @BigWaylon referenced, use your favorite search engine with the search term and the name of whichever website you’re searching as your query.

Much better results.

Which is surprising because they’re just a front end of an SQL database and this is the sort of thing SQL was designed for an excels at.

Yep and it has always been this way. I had a Vbullentin site WAY back in the day and it was just as horrible at searching.

There’s a motorcycle forum with 300k members running on VBulletin owned by the Canuck media company. A new guy will ask a straightforward question on the forum, and a long timer will invariably say, “YOU NEED TO DO A SEARCH ON THE SITE.”

Sheyea, like that will turn up anything.

Methinks they missed the "social" part of "social media". That's stupid-rude.

A simple "check out this thread, it'll have what you need" with a link would have worked.

Mods, how much of a difference does the thread’s tags make?
As far as what?

I just went to look for somebody using them, which was harder than I expected. 🤣

They do seem to hold an advantage over the Sold/SPF/etc dropdown options. If you click Sold in a forum, it’ll filter to all the ads in that one forum. But if you click a tag (I tested “revolver”), it brought up all threads with that tag…both in the discussion areas and the BST.

Not sure if it helps with the search function itself or not.

Good to know, I've been adding tags to threads believing they'd be easier to search.
