I've been giving this some thought lately...
And sure, there are lots of other things I've done that might mean that I'm an idiot...
But would I be an idiot to trade one of my AR's for an M1 Carbine?

Whatcha think?

AR-15’s IMO aren’t worth what folks are asking as of late. But depending on the M1, (brand, condition), that would be a trade I’d certainly consider very hard.

Most of the consideration goes to the make and condition of the M1. Then it depends on what your AR is made of. Ammo prices for both are higher than they need to be. You can pick up .30 carbine for about $0.37 a round if you don't mind Korean Surplus. AR rounds are all over the place!

exactly!! I'm okay being a fopp, fudd, boomer, grey beard or whatever...

But I try to avoid being too dumb, on purpose.
Welcome to the club! I'm ok being a fopp, fudd, boomer, grey beard or whatever...As long as I have a bigger gun, or more guns, or shiny guns, or guns that shoot but don't shine, etc. and a finger that can pull 1 1/2 to 8 lbs!

Make sure you know what to look for or have someone who does look at it. Years ago, I traded a Romanian PSL for an M1 carbine that turned out to be dangerous to shoot due to it being worn out. Like anything else in life, know what you have and what your getting into. Just because it is beautiful does not mean it is better. I learned that with wife number 4.

So ... if I'm looking to trade, i should take her out to the range and make sure she functions as expected and is not... how you say... "worn out?"
And of course I should keep in mind that 'beautiful doesn't mean better" too?

See, I'm learning so much... (about m1 carbines, of course)

You should definitely take her out to the range to make sure her action is good! Of course, action being outstanding, it doesn't hurt if she is beautiful!!

This is a c&r firearm post... it could go all NSFW in the blink of a whispering eye, but I really am talking about the M1 Carbine...
I appreciate the points about "Ensuring the function and action of the firearm" and "don't get blinded by pretty walnut, etc."
Not someone's hot 4th wife who maybe did not work out because he didn't have someone more knowledgeable check her out first... or whatever.

I really am considering swapping One of my AR15S, (and mags, ammo, etc) For someone else's m1 carbine. I don't know if it is a partsasaurus, or inland, or rockola, or whatever.
Thanks!

In my opinion, it depends. What AR and what M1. Another thing to consider is ammo availability. AR ammo is becoming difficult to grab, so not sure the nature of .30 at this point.

I’ll throw out a weird twist and why I’ve picked up a couple extra M1 Carbines lately ... read the past 5 or so Assault Weapons Ban drafts and under the Firearms Exempted you will see “M–1 Carbines with standard fixed stock” ... I don’t know exactly why Feinstein and others exempt them but their boiler plate bill text does. Now that could change but for now that’s how it reads.

ETA: under the exemptions it also lists Garands, Mini 14’s & 30’s w/ fixed stocks and SKS’s with the orginal 10 round interval mag & fixed stock.

@NCFubar that's one of my considerations and I've got a bunch more like:
I think the carbine would meet very likely meet needs, even if there are ways in which an AR would be more effective,
And I just think they're kind of cool where my AR's are more like tools. I like wood better.
And to me there's something more like craftsmanship there...
And if one of the very worst scenarios came to pass, i really think it might be less headline-grabbing than the AR.
I don't see the range and distance as limitactions or any sort of problem
And I've planned well in terms of 5.56 and 223, and adding a caliber that less people want seems smart.

I understand go on, but in this forum, I'm just preaching to the choir...

The first thing you'll want to know about the M1 is if it's a GI or commercial model. Of course the real deal military issued ones are more expensive and obviously collectable, but there are some commercial models that are good copies that will exchange parts with the GIs and make great shooters as well as still being slightly collectable IMHO. Stay away from the commercial models that stray too far from the original design like many of the Universal brand.

Dumb question ... I picked up my last M1 Carbine in a trade and I haven’t seen a M1 Carbine in a LGS lately ... and in the past few years when I did see the little rifle I’d see only one maybe two a year. Who is letting them go ... outside of estates being picked up? Or maybe the guy like in the OP swapping for what they believe may be a better opinion with possible gun control measures in the near future?

Royal Tiger has been importing a bunch of them from Ethiopia lately.

Somewhat related. Years ago I traded a Glock 23 for a Chinese SKS "paratrooper" (yeah, I know the story). Haven't regretted the trade. Sure the Glock was more "valuable in $$" but to me the SKS was more desirable. Plus I had other pistols in 9mm and 45acp so the Glock was just an extra. I had no battle rifle at the time, so ... I traded even. The SKS has all matching #s except the unnumbered stock, is in very good condition and came with two extra stocks (a fiberglass stock and composite), and 300 rds of ammo. I am still happy with the deal.

I now also have an AR. But not going to get rid of the SKS.

To bring this back to the M1 Carbine subject. My brother has a WWII bring back that he has promised to give me. I just need to drive 500 miles to get it.

That is a drive worth making before he changes his mind.

Yep, but he has a hard time of letting go..... of anything. Not going to drive 500 miles to find out he just can't let go of it at this time.

For you, @BatteryOaksBilly I will word it differently. I have done dumb things throughout my life. Some were little things. Some were majestic, enormous borderline Darwin award winners.
Inot my younger days I dated and attracted a string of certifiable cases... so many that I may have had a surgically implanted "insane magnet"
I jumped out of perfectly good airplanes over and over. I once ran into a live minefield and whacked someone with my helmet, on purpose and thought it was the right thing to do.
Once, during rifle qualification at a Marine Corps base, I shot the lollypop on purpose.
I've hand caught a vampire bat in panama and more spiders, snakes, turtles, scorpions, raccoons and other wild critters than I could remember... many times they were venomous.
I've chased tornados, and swam with sharks.

I'm a fan of revolvers, I like Taurus, and I generally wear shorts and a tshirt unless it is less than 30 degrees out. I like some country music AND some Rap. I still think george strait is better than george jones.
I still think that the drummers were the best parts of both Led Zeppelin and Nirvana, but anyone with zero talent could have a number 1 hit with either Nile rogers or Lee sklar in their band. I enjoy Paul Harrell and Yankee Marshall...
I like rap, and pop, and country, and jazz... and almost all LIVE music.

Maybe I was an idiot all along. Maybe I just had a bad day from time to time, or made a few booboos. So. Is this the one, giant collosal example that proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am and have always been an idiot? Or is this just one more "meh, that was dumb" thing scattered on the road i'm on?

Are we certain the trade has anything to do with the condition?:p

I married Sisters[REALLY].......Now whatcha got???
The above might negate my opinion but I'd take the carbine.

If it is a quality M1 carbine like a military issue I would go for it. If it is a Universal brand don't think about it . They are junk I've had 3 different ones over the years and could not hit a coke can from 25 feet away with either one of them.

This. When things cool down, the AR will go back to being an AR. A quality Carbine will still hold its value.

I recently picked up a bring back m1 carbine and there's just something about it. I thoroughly enjoy an ar but it just doesn't have the same feeling. The carbine is very handy and you can almost feel its history. There is tons of reading you can do on the wartime carbines. Pulling one apart is kind of like solving a mystery, pretty much all the parts are stamped by manufacturer, so seeing if you have an all matching example or not is really interesting. Not to mention looking for ordinance stamps, re-arsenal stamps, and proof stamps seemingly randomly placed all over the stock. I may have to post a thread about my adventure going through this carbine, it's been fun. I would trade an ar for an m1 carbine, especially if you have an extra from before panic pricing.

My sister married my oldest sisters ex husband so both sisters have the same last name. The ex wife sister was the witness and bridesmaid for sister when she married her ex. Now there ya go Billy . So John buy the carbine
