Since we seemed to be heading into a new ice age i was thinking of buying good wool blankets for my children. I need a good source of real wool blankets. Preferably something that is not made for a horse blanket, i.e. can't be super rough. But i want heavy duty and warm. Something that will last a life time if taken care of. Anyone know of good sources of these?

Military surplus?

I have been given a few of these at work in the past, that we were given to hand out to the urban outdoorsmen in the frigid chilly weather

I've had some of these before. They are not made of thread. They kind of look like they are pressed or something and partially not wool. I will check them all out, thanks for the links. I got some from CTD a long time ago and they stunk and were rough but they were all heavy duty wool.

The local homeless shelters usually clean out the harbor freights of these 80% wool 20% poly blend blankets in wintertime. I have a half dozen and once you wash them in some Scent-A-Way and Woolite detergents, they get soft and are pretty popular around my house. $11 -20% off you can't beat that with a branch. Buy those $100 moth attractors all you want :D

If you wanna get fancy, find someone who quilts to incorporate these cheap wool blankets into a nice homey quilt for a heck of alot less than $100-300

I never considered washing those, and honestly didn't think anything could remove the smell, just stowed them away as truck blankets and brass mats. Now that you tell me they get soft I'm gonna try it.

This is probably along the lines of what i will get. I think just plain colors would suffice.

Ikarus1 - I like your suggestion too. For $11.00 that is hard to beat. If they wash up well these may be good thing to have in stacks.
I ordered 4 Yakima camp blankets for my G-kids today.
If they take care of they, they will be able to give them to their G-kids.

I got one of these off amazon and it’s verrry nice. Soft, not scratchy, doesn’t smell bad, nice weight to it, and warm. Slightly more than I wanted to pay but for a backup blanket while camping it’s perfect!

Don’t know how I never saw these, unless they’re always cleaned out as you say. Seems perfect to keep in a vehicle.

Yep the smell is the antimoth treatment chemical. Scentaway or similar noscent deer hunting detergent will take it out and woolite or a fabric softener works wonders. I have several stacked up in the house and cars, and one at the foot of our bed. I have been told its a great quilt backer
