While at Lidls today with the wife I struck up a conversation with a WW11 Navy Vet wearing a DAV T-shirt and sporting a pair of Canadian Walkers ( crutches). This old warrior had to have been 6'6" and could have passed for Celtics great Bill Russell's twin. I thanked him for his service, and he stated that he and his brother had both joined 0n 8 Dec, 1941 and immediately teared up as he revealed that his brother never made it back..He was quick to tell me that the real " heros" never made it back! He went on to explain that he had seen action on several ships and was wounded in the South Pacific and thanked me for my service.
What an absolute pleasure....
He was 96 years old!
A salute to you sir as one of the truely " greatest generation"!

I used to have a customer in my home depot, he had a small limp, I thanked him for his service, he told me
that he has no regrets, would do it all again no changes, each time he passes a school yard full of kids is the reason why.

My wife makes a point to speak to every veteran wearing the veterans ball cap of some sort or any other paraphernalia she sees. I do it to some extent in the hospital, but she does it everywhere. I have had the most remarkable conversations.

Last Summer, maybe summer before that, I can't remember, I saw an old man sitting on a bench in front of the main entrance to the hospital wearing a Pearl Harbor veteran ball cap. So I walked up to him and start talking to him. He was not on the Arizona, he was on one of the other boats, I can't recall which, but we must have talked for an hour.

Talking to these old Vets can be a lesson in history! My wife is a VA home care nurse. She comes home with some of the most amazing stories from these guys that aren’t amazing to them, just everyday stuff that happened. And no one of them will refer to themselves as Hero’s! Just doing the job. These are the men that I idolize, and the reason that I chose my career in the Army. I wish that I could tag along with her some days but the new HIPA Regis forbid it. She can’t even visit these guys after hours. They are a dying breed that I don’t think we’ll ever see again!

That's the best story I've heard in a long time. He is a Hero to me no matter what he say's. I try to speak to vets an,active military and First Responders and Thank them for their service every time I can.
