I'm not a Star Wars geek by any stretch. I haven't watched all of the animated series (though I did catch the Bad Ones) or comics. I just watch the movies. I decided to turn them on as background noise while working this week, starting with Episode 1 and continuing all through the time line chronology.

My point.

In the prequels, Episodes 1-3, R2-D2 is around as Anakin's droid and then gets passed around a bit along the way, but he's pretty much always present. Yoda and Anakin are on the Jedi Council together, etc.

So, when we get to Episode 5, Empire Strikes Back, why doesn't R2 fill Luke in on who Yoda is? Why does R2 zap Yoda when Yoda is acting like a homeless pickpocket and trying to take Luke's stuff?

Probably had his memory erased. I remember in the animated series they talked about wiping droids memories after certain missions and stuff so if they were captured they couldn't share info with whoever.

Hmmmm…..maybe. Except C-3PO and R2 are presented as buddies and “have worked together in the past” when Uncle Owen buys ‘em from the Jawas.

Conclusion: I need to stop avoiding this irritating/irritated client and get back to work.

As far as canon is concerned I'm pretty sure his memory has never been wiped unlike C-3PO.

I more so want to know how Leia remembers a mother that died while giving birth. Now that is a plot hole. That and how Luke isn't immediately disgusted that his sister made out with him when Obi-wan tells him who she is. You know Luke had some fantasies after that.

Because episodes 1-3 didn't actually take place before the first trilogy.

This is what happens when you make stuff up as you go along, then start creatively backlogging movies.

The R2 unit's memory was wiped by Ripley after Captain Kirk rescued the droid from the nexus-6 replicants in a daring escape from Giedi Prime.

This all comes out in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy v3 : The Search for WALL-E.

Actually, at the end of the third prequel when Senator Organa took baby Leia he also took C-3po and said that he would have the droids memory wiped.

There are lots of issues with R2-D2 and his interactions with other characters in the Star Wars timeline. I always considered two different possibilities to explain the R2-D2 and Yoda interaction. The first is that his memory was wiped. As others have mentioned at the end of Revenge of the Sith C-3P0s memory is wiped after he leaves with Senator Organa. This is cannon. There is no mention of R2-D2 ever getting his memory wiped but Empire is about 20 years later so it is possible. The other explanation is that R2-D2 knows exactly who he is and chooses not to reveal it the time or was not able to tell Luke even if he wanted to. Luke at this point does not understand R2 directly but only knows what R2 says via C3PO.

I prefer the second explanation. I always look at R2-D2 as the thread that stretches and connects the entire Skywalker universe within Star Wars. He is seen in all of the films and is a major part of the animated series the Clone Wars. I mean he is the one who delivers the plans of the Death Star to the rebels in Star Wars. He is always there and he often saves the day. He always "knows" what is going on and how to fix it. When there is a critical do or die moment R2 is always present and often part of the solution. It continues with the Mandalorian where RD2 seems to acknowledge Grogu and many speculate that it was R2 two saved him from Anakin's killing of the younglings. So tying back into the original question R2 knows who Yoda is but chooses not to reveal it because it would hinder Lukes training. R2 if his memory is intact has seen Jedi training techniques before.

I always took this statement to refer to their time working for Capt. Antillies on the ship which was transporting Leia. Later as he is getting an oil bath he says they have been in the service of Antillies for sometime and they have seen many battles involving the rebels and the Empire.

RD2 also has recognition issues with multiple other characters like Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. They all can be explained "From a certain point of view".
