Which is the better rifle for someone just starting out with AKs? I see prices are close, usually within 100.00 or so.
I've read a lot of stuff online and seen positive and negative reviews on each, which I expect since nothing is perfect.
But if yall had to pick between the two rifles, which would you pick?
Thanks

Yugo is noticebly heavier and harder to find aftermarket parts for. I've got mine outfitted with a magpul zhukov (yugo version) and a midwest industries mlok rail to fit an MRO. Doesnt fit some of the popular safeties and sights but the amount of parts that DO fit is growing every day. Also have a romanian cugir G kit comparable to a wasr and it is much lighter than the yugo and fits most standard AK parts but the wood furniture for it required some fitting. I think no matter which way you turn, you're gonna run into compatibility issues. But as far as fit and function, I think they are side by side.

Honestly I'm not worried about aftermarket parts. I just want a tough reliable gun with open sights that can take 30 round mags. My SKS can and I do have some 30 round mags for it but the 10 round mag is much more reliable.

@Matthew douglass covered the bases well. The WASR 10 is what I recommend to all new AK folks. It's a basic, no frills, solid shooter. It's affordable enough that you can run it hard and not worry about wear and tear, and easy enough to recoup most if not all of your money if you decide it's not for you.

For lack of better words, it's an ideal "entry level" AK that honestly will hang with a lot of the far more expensive variants out there.

If you go the WASR route and don't care about aftermarket parts, I'd still implore you to replace the furniture. The balsa wood that comes on these is garbage. You can pick up some nice Romanian surplus laminate for cheap, complete with a "donkey dong" or palmswell lower handguard depending on your taste. Surplus bakelite grips are only a few bucks and look a lot better than the crappy black plastic grip that comes with these, too.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I'm after, a basic no frills reliable gun. I know it won't be the best, I'm not expecting 1200,00 worth out of a 600.00-700.00 gun.
I actually like the plain jane look lol. My SKS is plain as can be and I love it.
I've got a .308 if I want to shoot something far away, and I really didnt care much for the AR15 (I know some heads will explode lol) but I love my SKS so I figure the best way to get something with more capacity is an AK.
I'm hoping to find a WASR10 for around 600.00 in the next few weeks when I'm ready to buy.
Thanks for the input guys.

Most people taking their time to answer to this realize that AKs have a place in every arsenal. The AR cant do it all. And doesnt even look as good doing half of it.

I normally would vote for the Yugo but most of the PAP's were set up for single stack, so you have to be careful. Now if it is an O-PAP snag it! I have nothing against the WASR as they are a great choice but Yugo AK's are the most robust, especially the one's w/ a 1.5mm RPK bulged trunnion.

my first AK was a late production NPAP, and it has served many roles I ask of a rifle. It's accurate, fairly easy manual of arms, it has good power out to 200yds, ammo is cheap.
I paid less than the typical WASR price, and feel like it's a good value in a new production AK.

The only advantage that the WASR has is that it has a chrome lined barrel and uses standard AK furniture. That's pretty much it. They also cost more now.

The cold hammer forged barrel on the NPAP makes it accurate. Mine is an easy 2MOA rifle with a red dot and decent Golden Tiger FMJ. If it's more accurate than the WASR, then the other 'disadvantages' are not really in play for me.

Yeah, I think the Yugo's get buried under the WASR recommendations, but again, they are a good choice too. I just prefer Yugo's.

NPAP, OPAP good to go. The regular PAP may or may not be depending on single stack/conversion. I'm also a fan of (properly) built surplus kits.

Please tell my wife this for me, she insists she's always right...

Honestly for the price of today's Century AKs they're still importing and mostly leaving alone like the NPAP and WASR, you can snag a NICE Norinco MAK90.......and the Chinese got it right the first time.
Every one I have ever held and shot has been lights out, and they seem lighter yet tougher than my NPAP. No optics rail used to be a downer for me until the Ultimak and MI's version of the gas tube pic rails appeared.

I ended up with the WASR. The mags and ammo that came with it made it a deal too good to pass on.

Congrats! You could have done a lot worse. If it's a newer import with that crummy blonde wood, I'll repeat my suggestion to replace the furniture with surplus laminate. WASRs are tough and can take a lot of abuse, but that "hard"wood Century Arms has been using the last few years is weak garbage.

Great choice , everyone needs a WASR or 2. They use to be the butt of jokes but they hold there own in reliability. It's as good as rifles that cost 2-3 times as much.

The WASR rifle has changed the face of the US. Let the GOV ban the importation of Romainian AK's and you would see a panic like never before.
