I'm going to start using my 15-22 more to practice barricade and position shooting. Goal is getting into position with quick transitions without spending $0.50/round. Dry fire is part of it, but really at some point you need to go 'bang'. The optic I'm using mirrors one I'm using on a .223 competition rifle. BUT...the mount I have in hand requires that the front lug is on the handguard. I can roll with it as is and accept whatever POI shift results. Or, I can drop $$ on a new 34mm mount.

I need to be reasonably accurate, but really that's not the primary goal. I'm considering that the polymer handguard, wedged into various barricades, may induce too much POI shift.

Thoughts?

Seems to me that mounting on the handguard is always a bad idea. I believe it's the reason why they make cantilever mounts.

I would definitely go cantilever, for the reasons you discussed. The polymer on my 15-22 handguard does flex, and while it's great as a gripping space and holder for my handstops, I would not trust it to hold zero on an optic. Just not worth the guesswork when cantilever mounts exist.

For what it's worth I really like Scalarworks mounts for my 15-22 since the locking system is just "turn the locking wheel until it doesn't turn with hand pressure anymore." So it inherently puts as much stress as the polymer can safely handle and not more. If you don't mind buying a mount that's more expensive than the original gun was, the Scalarworks mounts are a really great fit for 15-22s.

It's a shame you need a 34mm instead of a 30mm, as I have a Scalarworks 30mm mount I'll no longer have a need for since I just went back to running a red dot instead of an LPVO on my 15-22.

this is what you need.

A 34mm P.E.P.R just popped up on the AR15.com equipment exchange for $75 (half off MSRP). No relationship with seller, etc.
