Any gamers here?

It’s like the designers hate ergonomics.
See it used to be the other way round for me. Loved the PS2 controller and when I got an Xbox I thought it was a huge awful carbunkle. Over time I've been warped and corrupted by Xbox, much like Gollum was by the ring.

Strange critter...

Soldered in mobile processor. Hard pass.

I've allways stayed with the Playstation consoles cause I absolutely hate the way the Xbox controllers feel. The Playstation controllers fit and feel better in my hands while playing games. Kinda like a firearm if it don't fit and feel right in the hand your not gonna use it. But as far as game play goes there's not much difference between Xbox systems and Playstation systems.
I bought a $600 PS3 and watched the damned game my wife was playing crash and hang and when she turned it off, it popped the Blu-ray diode. This was a big quality defect and there were a lot of these happening. If you sent in your PS3 they’d swap it out with some other refurbished one, which I wasn’t interested in because god knows what was done to it or how much abuse it had taken. Before that, however, the hard drive in it failed. Thankfully they were a standard laptop drive and I was able to replace it. Last Sony product I bought.

Pay me now, pay me later. PC's are too cheap right now to get a usable gaming machine. Buying one with very limited upgrade possibilities seems like throwing money away.

Better than a laptop, but still seems silly in a mATX sized PC. No word on other proprietary parts either.
I don't think the market is saying "Let's bring back the NUC, but make it bigger."

Back in the day, my xbox 360 would get the Red Ring of Death every month or two. Had to wrap it in a blanket and let it overheat for a couple of hours - then it'd fire right up for the next few weeks. (Seemed safe when I was in my early 20s...)

You remind me of the kid down the street in the neighborhood I grew up in. He wanted to have dimmed light in his room so he threw a blanket over a table lamp with a 60 watt bulb. Wasn't long before the room smelled like burning plastic and his parents went to investigate.

As a former gaming laptop owner (in college, when they weighed about 25 pounds), I also believe gaming laptops are a gigantic waste of money (outside of something from Framework which is its own animal).

If you're Asian and all you ever play are mobile games, but you want a regular keyboard and a monitor? Probably a decent sized niche over there.

They're finally expanding the map in 76.

I've been avoiding spoilers from people playing on the test servers, but several of the people I play with regularly have tested it out and are pretty excited about the update. Feedback has been positive.

I haven't even explored a quarter of what's there now!

Every once in a while I still see the hollow icon of a map symbol I haven't visited, and I've played off and on for years.

A friend I gave a copy of the game a couple of years ago sent me a thank you note and this screenshot...

My issue currently is I'm not sure which of my quests are doable at my level (34) and which just lead me to my death. Last one I tried took me over a mountain with Deathclaws on it. I barely got away from them, but ran into a patrol of four or five super mutants with automatic weapons. Ended as you expect lol

Later though super mutants are just critters you farm for exp. I have a lazy full health power armor build with all the tanky mutations and perks. I can AFK in the middle of a group of super mutants.

With this one the mutants with lasers slightly heal you and recharge your core with every shot.

As soon as you hit 25 go get some power armor.

Then find a nice build.

Speaking of the parent company that makes Fallout: https://games.slashdot.org/story/24...x-is-planning-more-cuts-after-studio-closings

The sudden closure of several video-game studios at Microsoft's Xbox division was the result of a widespread cost-cutting initiative that still isn't finished. From a report:This week, Xbox began offering voluntary severance agreements to producers, quality assurance testers and other staff at ZeniMax, which it purchased in 2020 for $7.5 billion, according to people familiar with the company's plans. Others across the Xbox organization have been told that more cuts are on the way. Employees were shocked by the unexpected shuttering Tuesday of three Xbox subsidiaries and the absorption of a fourth. The closures included Tokyo-based Tango Gameworks, which last year released the critically acclaimed action game Hi-Fi Rush. Tango was in the process of pitching a sequel, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing nonpublic information.

During a town hall with ZeniMax staff on Wednesday morning, Xbox president Matt Booty praised Hi-Fi Rush but did not specify why the company had shut down the development studio behind it, according to three people who were in attendance. Speaking about the closures more broadly, Booty said that the company's studios had been spread too thin -- like "peanut butter on bread" -- and that leaders across the division had felt understaffed. They decided to close these studios to free up resources elsewhere, he said. Booty added that the shutdown of subsidiary Arkane Austin, the longtime developer of games such as Prey, was not connected to the performance of its new multiplayer game, Redfall, a critical and commercial flop.

I wonder if Todd Howard will finally get the axe?

I suspect I'll be grinding perk cards a while before I can build a solid build, I keep getting a bunch of the same few cards. I'll have it at max and get more.

Disney is in trouble. Paramount faces a sale. Both giants are laying off employees left and right. The summer box office schedule points to a weak year. Even the normally off-target pundits at NPR realize something is amiss with Hollywood. It might even be collapsing. With AI generated content around the corner, it will only get worse. This is a prison of their own making. They happily donned the ideological garments that taint every production. They relied so much on CGI that replacing it with pure AI visuals will be seamless. They have to get back to basics. They need good money makers to build back up. Recent trends might offer a path forward. Prepare for a wave of video game movies.

It sounds stupid, but the trend is there. The Sonic movie was a runaway hit grossing over $300 million with merchandise to sell. The Super Mario Brothers film cracked $1.3 billion as a perfect children’s movie. The Fallout franchise inspired an Amazon series with decent buzz. Hollywood is lazy. Hollywood wants IP that has a built in audience to guarantee a minimum for ticket sales to justify budgets. This is a match made in heaven.

They've been doing this. Wasn't Doom a forgettable movie? Not a video game, but Dungeons and Dragons sucked. Tomb Raider was ok, both times. Seems like they need to make blockbuster level movies if they want to succeed at this.
Alternatively, getting rid of the woke writers and casting agents seems like a sure winner.

Really? I liked it a lot!

Which one?
the 2023 one was decent, but not great at all. the older one from 2000ish - blah.

On the adaptation front, as many or more have bombed than were successful.

Box Office/Streaming that did not meet expectations:

- Mortal Kombat
- Max Payne
- Prince of Persia
- Doom
- Silent Hill
- Tekken
- Street Fighter
- Monster Hunter
- Far Cry
- Uncharted
- Final Fantasy

Big Hits:
- The Last of Us
- Halo
- Mario
- Warcraft (made almost all money internationally and still came in under targets)
- Tomb Raider (one of the first but got horrible reviews)
- The Witcher

If you look at even the most successful movie video game adaptations, VERY few actually surpass $100M in net earnings.

Aeon Flux the movie sucked too. Everybody that saw it was there for Charlize Theron. Bunch of 20 something dorks all sitting alone in a matinee showing.

Hitman wasn't too bad, but it really deviated from the nature of the game by turning it into a bunch of blazing gun battles.

Edit to add, the Bioshock series could be made into a good movie / show, if the writers are creative and don't take too many liberties with the cannon.

Netflix is making a BioShock movie.
