I’ve never fished a chatterbait before. I picked up one from Academy to try. Any tips on how to effectively use them?

Fish it like you would a jig. You can bounce them along the bottom or swim them depending on what the fish want. Mix it up to see what works.

Get a zoom swimming super fluke jr that somewhat matches the color of the bait as a trailer. I’ve found they work better with trailers. Heres a pic showing the trailers I use. I use paddle tail vs straight tail because of the extra action the paddle tails give

When you're able, could you take a pic of that setup laid out on a table or something? I saw your FB on catching that on a chatterbait and figured I'd give them a try.

Casion (out of Sanford?) Makes a Chatterbait specific rod that I bought at BPS with a Daiwa Tatula baitcasting reel and lined with 15lb Seaguar Red Label Fluorocarbon.

It has become my favorite setup.

1] Make a long cast with your Chatterbait.

2] Let it reach the bottom.

3] Point your rod tip at the bait.

4] Tighten the line and pop the bait off the floor.

5] Slow roll/reel it back.

6] Keep the rod tip pointed at the bait the ENTIRE TIME.

7] When you don't feel the "Chatter", set the hook.

Yamamoto, Hawg Farmerz and Missle Baits all make great dedicated Chatterbait trailers.

Anyone use pork rinds for jig trailers anymore. I think I’ve caught my largest fish with a jig and pork rind set up over the years. But I’ve gotten cheap and lxy and mostly use plastics now.

I haven’t seen them for sale in years. Most folks use plastic craws now.

Here are a few of mine. I use the same rod for spinnerbaits as I do chatterbaits. I was running them on 12 lb mono but I’ve switched to Suffix 832 30 lb braid. I’m slowly switching a lot of mine to braid. Some I use straight braid and others I use a mono leader.

But back to a chatterbait, I like using a paddle tail swimmer or a curly tail worm as a trailer for more action. Depending on season and water color will depend on which I throw but I’d say 80% of the time I throw a spot remover color with white or chartreuse trailer.

No idea why by I've done better with a split straight tail trailer. Go figure. I use them, but not as much as some. I normally just throw and retrieve like a spinnerbait.

Think I went away from them when I lived in CA. That sun could dry them out so damn fast if they were on the boat deck. I remember trying to get them off a hook after they dried out and shriveled up. But I had my best haul ever using them on a night fishing trip.

I have a few, I've had followers, not one bite in 3 years. Lots of people kill on them, must be me, don't throw them much anymore.
