Mandatory Fish Reporting

I would like to know who submitted this section of the overall bill and why? Is it to justify that recreational anglers are taking to many fish, or commercial take?

So, what happens if you catch a flounder during the closed season? Do you report it? :D

Seems typical of big gubmint, fixing a problem that didn’t exist.

This is the same kind of thing we had for salmon and crab back in Washington. When you got your license you were issued a catch record card. You either turned in the card by mail or filed the info on-line. If you were issued a card and didn't turn it in (even with zero harvest) your license was an additional $10 the next year. It wasn't as bad as it sounds - if there is a legitimate reason for it.

I don't target these fish so I don't know if there's a real problem or not they need to solve.

California has it for Sturgeon and Steelhead .

It’s another reason people will begin to catch these fish illegally and go around the law. You can go to SC and catch all the flounder you want every month of the year. Same for Virginia. I guess NC legislators consider themselves the smartest people and the environmental compass for all of us. Just another bunch of elitist politicians making stupid decisions.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Fish Stealers are behind this. They have lobbyists and they barely report their harvests or comply with the law now. Most of the reporting will come from the recreational side and the data will suggest that the recreational weekend anglers are catching all of the fish.

It’s because of NC’s relaxed approach to commercial fishing and the money they spend lobbing the legislators. VA and SC doesn’t not allow commercial fishing in the inshore and very near shore areas like NC. And believe it or not, they don’t have any problems.

As a for hire fishing vessel we have been having to do this for a couple years now. We have a "map" divided up in zones and we are supposed to report how many fish and what kind of fish were released live and dead and what kind and quantity we kept and the location of each. we don't keep a notepad and write down how many grunts or undersized sea bass we release so the data they get is worthless. If I didn't submit the paper work on time a lady from marine fisheries calls and reminds me to do it.

I don’t think it is really you guys causing the problem. I think it’s more the commercial net fishermen. IMHO, Charters are like recreational fishermen.

Just this past week I talked to a fish monger and asked him out of curiosity if he had any crabs for sale. He said sure, they were only $60 a dozen, $70 a dozen steamed with a little Old Bay. I about pooped my pants when he said $60 a dozen! I politely asked what was going on with the crabs to make them so expensive. He told me that the redfish had eaten them all and it was time to open the commercial harvest of redfish to save the crabs. I said maybe so but then what about the hundreds (thousands?) of crab pots filling every sound, bay, and creek from the SC line to the VA line? I told him that perhaps leaving them out of the water for a season or two maybe we could all take some string and some chicken necks and go have some fun catching a few crabs. He looked dumbfounded as I guess he never had anyone tell him that. His business is selling fish that were caught by commercials. Commercial fisherman by and large are a protected class and one should never say anything derogatory about them. I would bet this legislation came from a commercial source or their lobbyists would have killed it in committee.

The redfish ate all the crabs. Geez.

I agree. I also think something has to be done. I don't know what I feel for the com guys. For some if not most of them that's all they know how to do as far as making a living for their family. Who am I or anyone else to tell those guys they can't go make a living?
