Is it OK to drill a hole in a Canon safe? As far as voiding the warranty. I want power inside for lights and Golden rod. When I called Canon, the lady said it was fine to drill it, so long as the hole wasn't too large. She said the hole could be large enough for the plug to go through, which really surprised me. That's probably a 1" + size hole.

My opinion is you paid your money for it, you can do as you wish.

Personally, I wouldn't drill a hole any bigger than what you need for the cord itself and a plastic grommet if you want to take the simplest route. No need to drill a hole large enough the the plug when all you need is one big enough for the cord itself.

Remove the plug, feed the cord through, replace the plug. Seal around the hole with a bead of silicone caulk for moisture resistance.

Being an engineer, though, I'd consider going the route of a nylon stuffing tube and rubber grommet insert sized to fit a quality round power cord. This way the penetration will definitely be air/water tight, a consideration for moisture control inside the safe.

The installation hole will be larger than the simplest route I described above, though. 0.885 inch to 1.010 inch for a size 1 or 2 nylon stuffing tube, depending on the cable diameter.

some cannon safes have an electrical feed through on the lower right rear of the cabinet... some even have USB feeds...

and good info above, small enough for cable only,
even most of the golden rods used to have a cord where u needed to attach the plug connection...

BEFORE you drill, use and old mechanicā€™s trick for getting through carpet. Drill bits will wind the fabric up quick fast and in a hurry.
Find a short plastic/metal tube the drill bit will fit into. Take a razor and slice the fabric where you want the hole, large enough the tube will fit through. Once the tube is in, drill through the safe, inside to out. Your fabric will stay intact.

I was going to use AlexSel for waterproofing the hole. Maybe Alexseal on the outside and fireproof caulk on the inside?

One of my safes has the power box on the lower right. With USB outlets. The other one does not.

I'd get one of these, take the back off and disconnect the cord. Drill just enough hold to feed the cord through then wire it back in and put the back on. Will screw to the inside of the safe and give you a couple power ports plus usb ports. I know several people who put external usb disks in the safe to backup their pictures to, have their home camera system dump to, etc. Chances are you'll end up wanting to put more than just a dehumidifying rod in there (lights, etc) over time so having a couple extra power sources never hurts.
Cannon has been putting power in safes for years through, check the bottom corner, yours might already have a pass through port in it now.

Was there a link to something there?
