Thanks

1. There are nice swimming trunks and baseball equipment at academy sports. There are NOT legal experts at academy sports.

2. You seem to be seeking a quick answer to a question that could cause you major problems. Quick answers are rarely the right ones. The answer is to hire an attorney and let them advise you.

3. Changing answers on federal documents, or being “pretty sure”about the answers is unwise. Answer: attorney.

4. The forum members have provided excellent advice including possible counsel recommendations.
I’m not sure what risk there is when nothing was submitted to an agency. Academy’s store policy shut down the sale, background check wasn’t submitted.

Well I think you honestly need to look up the actual definitions of the questions on the 4473 form. Without looking it up myself I can tell you that there is conflicting definitions in the question. The first is have you been adjudicated which generally means having had a hearing in front of a district court level judge. Because a magistrate does NOT do a commitment you may not have been adjudicated without more information. Just because a magistrate did a custody order and a doctor held you for a longer observation period, usually 7days, does not mean you were adjudicated mentally ill. Now if at some point you had a formal hearing in front of a judge with an attorney and the judge ordered you held than it's a moot point and you may never get that off you background. But if not I would talk to an attorney that can give you actual legal advice.

My FIL is a recovering alcoholic. Has not had a drink in 32 years. When he was at his worst 33 years ago, his family members used influence with Chatham County Sheriff to get him into Butner to dry out. I guess because of the new bipartisan (Republican and Dem) legislation he can no longer buy firearm. He did in fact try at Academy and they said it was a mistake so he tried another LGS and was denied again. Three days later ATF was at his front door, and now I have 8 guns added to my collection because the ATF said he can’t even have any guns or ammo. Meanwhile in Chicago…

That is just ridiculous.

Sorry about your FIL….

Has he considered joining the Sinaloa cartel? He’d have his 8 firearms back and the Bureau would probably give him a few more.
