The list of “where not to go” - Carolinas Edition

I had a singularly bad experience with the Arby's in Conway.
Bad disgusting, not bad dangerous.

I grew up in Fayetteville. Moved away in 1994.

Skibo wasn't the worst place by then but it wasn't great. I'm sure it's not any better today.

It's honestly not too bad with the exception of the number of accidents daily. I've been living in Fayetteville for the last five years.

Can not agree more on Wal-Mart... especially late at night.

Both my parents grew up in Fayetteville. The neighborhoods were nice way back then. I used to walk to Haymount from either of their parent’s houses (my grandparents) when I was an adolescent. It was a nice destination.

Everybody died off or moved on by the early 70’s. I assume the Vietnam war era is what ruined the town. I dunno.

Before Fayetteville, dad’s dad grew up in Red Springs at the turn of the last century. Great granddad was mayor of Red Springs. Grandad's bride to be’s father was head of the Bible department at Flora McDonald College, when it was still a college. I’m talking 1910, thereabouts.

Back in the 60’s I had three very old great aunts all still living in the crumbling Victorian house that great grandad built in Red Springs. I’ve got civil war kin buried in Alloway Cemetary there.

I started this thread because I've seen Fayetteville used as the punchline of more than a few jokes.

My wife wants to visit 'Christmas Tree Shops'.

I Googled it and it's on Skibo Road.

Being a transplant, I know nothing of Fayetteville, but I know at the range I've heard the name "Skibo Road" a bunch of times, and it's never in a good light.

It can't possibly be a no-go-zone with all the commerce that happens there, but I do want to follow the adage of "don't go stupid places".
Traffic around the mall is generally a nightmare, 295 will help you bypass a lot of it. If she wants to go just come early in the morning before all the idiots wake up.

Durham is not so bad ....
during the daylight
west of Mangum St, north of 147
while driving in the left lane
and carrying at least a couple of firearms

Not bad at all 😨

Still trying to find the dealer with one of these for sale

Any place that serves oniony peppery hush puppies and not sweet ones with sweet butter.

I like both, but the best are the sweet ones with the little tiny bits of Vidalia onion in that dissolve into the butter in your mouth. Lordy.

Durham gets a bad wrap, but stay away from the 10 square blocks of the Durham freeway and North Carolina Central campus, you're fine. The only thing it'll hurt you are the inflated prices at whatever high-end restaurant or bar you go to.

Chapel Hill, North of Rosemary and west of Airport....

Used to work off of Rosemary on McMasters in a mental health clinic. Our parking lot was a favored place to dump stolen cars.

Any street named after MLK.

Charlotte has one of the few that isn’t actually that bad…or at least not any worse than any other street downtown. They simply renamed 2nd St to MLK years ago, and it doesn’t extend outside of the main business area. . I worked in the circled building for a couple years when it was the BellSouth Plaza.

y'all are a bunch of sissies
I grew up at the salvation army a few miles north of the detroit city limits. we were between MLK and cesar chavez ave.
It was not a good area at all.
Then when I spent a few years working midnights in a detroit lab, it was on MLK. it was also not a good area at all. bullet holes in the building and wheels fell off cars in between security sweeps of the parking lot.

I really don't miss all that. not one bit.

Christmas Tree Store is fine. Skibo is busy no matter what day or time you're on it.

as with most places, some times are better than others.
mornings are better, because by afternoon all the worthless people are out causing trouble. And don't try skibo on a friday or saturday evening. you're gonna get caught up in the mob of disadvantaged people cutting in and out of traffic on their expensive atvs and dirt bikes.

Hickory- never let your GPS take you on South Center Street. Never, unless you need a crack buy or a $20 whore.

In Charlotte its South Tryon. Convenience stores are no go.
Have any whores cheaper than that? Asking for a friend.

As many of you know I'm new around here in NC. I don't get out much and when I do I don't get too far away from Matthews, Waxhaw, Weddington, South Charlotte, Ballantyne area. Honestly, scuzziest spot I've seen is the mall near Pineville. Makes me wonder if I landed in a fishbowl because I just don't see crimey areas.

Down east, the old saying used to be: If god wanted to give the world an enema, Kinston is where he'd stick the nozzle. But that is equally applicable to several other towns down that way now.

Definitely in a fishbowl. not complaining tho I live there too.

Any Chinese restaurant for me.

I haven't eaten Chinese food since the day after Thanksgiving 1995.

Passed 6 police cars yesterday when I was turning on my road. Two streets from me another shooting and this one was dead. Ten days ago there was a drive by where a woman was shot in the head on the same road. Third shooting on the same road in three months with a victim critical injured or dead.

Black community section of Newton. Lots of drug activity. I do not take service calls on this road or adjacent roads. Area referred to as East Side Newton.

This is accurate, and if you know the area you are scratching your head at the gentrification of Holloway Street. $600k-800k houses in an area with zero amenities.
