"Jan 11 (Reuters) - Personalized smart guns, which can be fired only by verified users, may finally become available to U.S. consumers after two decades of questions about reliability and concerns they will usher in a new wave of government regulation.

Four-year-old LodeStar Works on Friday unveiled its 9mm smart handgun for shareholders and investors in Boise, Idaho. And a Kansas company, SmartGunz LLC, says law enforcement agents are beta testing its product, a similar but simpler model."

As they observed in the article, finger print readers aren’t reliable. If there is the least amount of moisture on my finger, my iphone won’t unlock, and after a few months I have to reprogram it to my finger print because it just decides it no longer easily recognizes my finger print.

The secondary unlock feature on the smart gun requires you open an app on your phone.

The big issue on this is for states that have dormant laws in place that a successful introduction of 'smart guns' kicks in a prohibition on the sale of non 'smart guns'.
The article calls out the now repealed NJ law. In 2019 the ban law was replaced with a law that only required all guns shops to sell smart guns in addition to traditional guns. Still too much government, but not the ban they did have.

"...Citizen, where do you have your mandated smart guns for sale!?!"

*shop owner reaches into a dark, sad case and blows off the dust and hands over a pistol*

"Here you go, we carry one model, same one since it was required by law, it costs 1,000,000,000 dollars. Dont know why it never sells"

Good. That NJ law was my main concern about smart guns. Granted, it's always possible that California or some such could pass a new law saying only smart guns, but we can't see the future. More innovation is good, imo.

It'll be interesting to see if this leads to more integration of electronics into guns. Electronic triggers, electronic hammers/strikers. Electronic primers, or caseless ammo. built in batteries for built in red dots/lights.

WIll be interesting. I doubt it will happen any decade soon, gun owners are loathe to change, but would be interesting, kinda like that Remington Etronx.

It's the same crap that comes out periodically.

Don't forget the "shut down" code. Only the .gov will have it.

The .. if they will.

It'll be hacked, just like everything else. Bet on it.

Which means law enforcement and military will be the last to shift to it. I'd consider EMPing the .. out out of areas just to cause problems to ensure it's a PITA to implement mandates.

Good thing LEO, hunters, or anyone living north of Tennesseee don't wear gloves.

The fingerprint reader unlocks the gun in microseconds, but since it may not work when wet or in other adverse conditions, the PIN pad is there as a backup. LodeStar did not demonstrate the near-field communication signal, but it would act as a secondary backup, enabling the gun as quickly as users can open the app on their phones.

Yeah, that's a No for me.

I think CA has a similar law but I could be mistaken.

I'm fine with someone gouging their own eyes out, I just think it's a dumb idea
Right, but I guess I just don't want to be told I can't gouge my own eyes out. Or that I have to. The analogy is getting stretched at this point 😄

And of course, if you scratch the surface, you find this from one of the founders of LodeStar.

Howard Koh, former assistant Health and Human Services Secretary under the Obama admin, "directed his research".

what’s the big deal? The first thing you’re going to do in any situation is grab your phone so you can film it…
the ghetto kids are lightning fast on that action too. you'd think they practice "dry fire" at night.

This describes my wife. She is what I call "anti-authoritarian". She doesn't like to be told what she can do, nor what she cannot do.

She's a real PITA about this at times.

It does have it's up side occasionally. A few years back when we had a run on guns and ammunition because of the politics around some shooting and there was a huge talk about banning AR-15s and other "assault weapons", which caused the AR-15 market to skyrocket in prices, this woman...who couldn't have cared less about ever having or shooting an AR-15 style rifle...said "I want an assault rifle!"

We each have an M&P 15 as a result of that...with hers having been bought before mine, in fact.

After the market prices recovered first, of course.

Does your wife have a sister? (only joking).

NJ will ban all functional firearms when even one dumb gun is released for public sale, no matter how bad the gun is or how many people get killed.
Make all NJ law enforcement carry them first. see how many police get killed by criminals with functional guns.

Mods, did he cross the line in this thread? This appears to be his last post.
I predict it was a previously banned hooligan who got caught inside the perimeter (and in the crosshairs of the TB3k).

Just a guess.

Yes, she does.

And she's every bit as much of a pain in the keister in ways that most annoy me.

Don't get me wrong...they're both great people, but they both have some really annoying habits that grate on my nerves like a belt sander

That won't change anything. If anything, it'll prove law enforcement must have non-smart guns while it's illegal for everybody else.

That's the way it works.

Funny my wife feels the same way about me. :)

You are correct, but I still don't like it.

Tell her they're trying to ban .50cal Barrett's.
