Posted this in the basement but figured I’d give it more exposure out here. Posted this on my company IG page.
Gonna take a chance and weigh in on huskygate.
First, good for her having or taking an interest in hunting. It’s an important thing that most non hunters take for granted.
Second, let’s takes this as an opportunity to understand the importance of good mentors when learning to hunt. Your habits, skills, and understanding (or lack of) can be a direct result of who you are learning from. Seek out good advice from good, ethical hunters. Learn to filter out the non ethical clowns and ignore them.
Third, for the non hunters. Hunting is hours of boredom punctuated by second of near panic. You usually have a minute or less to ID the animal, find a shot or loophole for a shot, set the shot up, and take the shot. It’s an amazing amount of effort and activity in a very short window where you can barely even move without being seen. It is nerve wracking and people do make mistakes sometimes.
The part about mentorship above can shorten the learning curve and lessen those mistakes.
When in doubt wait. Never shoot something you are not confident you have identified. And if you make mistakes own them and learn from them.
Be careful out there. Be safe. Be smart. And have fun. Look for mentors. When you get good, be a mentor.
See you in the woods. Its about that time around here.
