Posted this in the basement but figured I’d give it more exposure out here. Posted this on my company IG page.

Gonna take a chance and weigh in on huskygate.

First, good for her having or taking an interest in hunting. It’s an important thing that most non hunters take for granted.

Second, let’s takes this as an opportunity to understand the importance of good mentors when learning to hunt. Your habits, skills, and understanding (or lack of) can be a direct result of who you are learning from. Seek out good advice from good, ethical hunters. Learn to filter out the non ethical clowns and ignore them.

Third, for the non hunters. Hunting is hours of boredom punctuated by second of near panic. You usually have a minute or less to ID the animal, find a shot or loophole for a shot, set the shot up, and take the shot. It’s an amazing amount of effort and activity in a very short window where you can barely even move without being seen. It is nerve wracking and people do make mistakes sometimes.

The part about mentorship above can shorten the learning curve and lessen those mistakes.

When in doubt wait. Never shoot something you are not confident you have identified. And if you make mistakes own them and learn from them.

Be careful out there. Be safe. Be smart. And have fun. Look for mentors. When you get good, be a mentor.

See you in the woods. Its about that time around here.

yeah.....that's not good.

She remained clueless even while skinning it, super proud of herself.

Loose dog, so I‘m not overly concerned about the morals of killing a dog, but if yer gonna kill something don’t you think you ought know what it is?

Almost had a similar thing happen back a few months ago. Took our youth pastor and his son coyote hunting. Went to one spot about 30 before dark. We spead out across a hedge row overlooking a field. His son up in a ladder stand so he can see better. We hunted this spot first so we could hunt in the daylight. Last year during deer season they heard or saw them almost every evening. Started calling and 10 minutes later had a German Shepard come running in and smelled my Mojo critter decoy. Closest house was a few hundred yards away. Luckily since it was still daylight, we were able to identify it. I have have hated shooting someone’s pet like that since he was just curious. Also lucky that he wasn’t aggressive. 20 more minutes and he might have been mistaken for a coyote

FWIW, it's not shooting the dog on the whole that bothers me. I don't know the story or the circumstances involved. And I thought briefly that I was going to have to shoot a Golden Retriever one hunt. First, he ran 2 deer by me at light speed so I was pissed. Second, I was not sure how a hyped up dog was going to react to seeing me tucked into the brush on the ground. He was going so fast he never even looked my way.

But shooting a dog, claiming it's a wolf, and doubling down when you are called out just means you don't really know what you are doing out there, And that can be a big problem.

It gets even crazier when you start finding out about coy-dogs and such. That's when behavior might be more important that physical looks.

My wife's 89 year old grandfather "PAPA". Several here will remember videos of him. He called and said he killed a big fox. Went down and he had a big reddish color husky strung up in the back yard. He took and buried it the next day.

It would be very easy to do with an Agouti Husky.

My grandfather once shot “something up in the pine scaring my cardinals” with a 10 gauge. Down came a great horned owl which he of course nailed to the barn because he‘d never seen one before.

Getting old sucks.

Not shameless but stolen:

Loss of life by any prey to a predator is natural...........we attach a value to animals we identify with or with those whom we share a history. I feel sorry for the both of them. If she finds out and is a dog lover it will be a very sad day for her.

The boyfriend's response to everyone calling her out for thinking that was a wolf pup. I don't understand how you skin a husky and still don't know it's not a wolf.
Blind and no sense of smell.

You know he's a bad dude because of the number of F bombs he used. Probably an MMA Special Operations Black Belt.

Someone was taking the pictures and I'm guessing it was him.

move us to tortuga and restore everything?

anyway, not super concerned if the dog was out living feral. if she was out in remote hunting land, this could be the case. it doesn't take a whole lot for dogs to go kinda feral (call of the wild and all that). There were packs of them roaming around detroit. you wanna be afraid? look at a bunch of escaped fighting pitbulls and rotweilers and their offspring packed up and walking your way.
so yeah, i don't care so much about what she did as think they were stupid for needing to put it all over social media

Don’t come after my cats lady!

I promise they are not black panther kittens.
stray cats were also a problem up north. made a mess of the dirt in my garden and stank up the place, kept us up at night yowling.
it probably wouldn't be legal to have done away with them, so i probably never did that.

I figured this was in AK, initially. I didn’t know Montana had a wolf season.

Some of y’all need to read previous post. She was hunting in Flathead NATIONAL FOREST. 18 dogs were driven out into the forest and turned loose. I’m not saying what she did was right but given the circumstances who would have thought a Husky would be out in the middle of a National forest. Don’t know how long it takes a dog to turn feral but they could have as much destruction on wild game as a wolf or coyote. It’s a shame she didn’t know the difference between a Husky and a wolf.

Several years ago, a friend called and asked if I could help take care of a feral dog problem that was killing their cows. Had a pack of about 10 or so. Amount them where. German shepherd mix and a Rottweiler mix. They took down a 400lb cow a few hours before we shot them.

Here’s the statement from the sheriffs department in case y’all can’t read the first one

I‘m amused by her obvious pride in her accomplishment, but yeah there isn’t anything wrong with the outcome IMHO. But I can just imagine the hate mail she got, and neither her actions not her boyfriends ineffective emotional response show hunters generally in the best light.

That’s all well in good, but she was hunting and had no clue what creature she was shooting at and killing. That is the problem regardless of whether the dog was feral or not. She bragged about killing a wolf. Kinda like going deer hunting and taking out a cow. She should not be hunting If she cannot identify what she is killing.

It doesn't appear that way, seeing as how clean that dog looks.

No kidding. Bleach white fur, come on.

She apparently pulled the "it was coming right at us" card once she got negative responses. Funny how stories change, you'd think if a wolf tried to attack her, that would be the focus in the initial post, glory hounds love drama. Not to mention, Huskys (as a breed) are not "come at you growling and snarling" type dogs. She's worse at damage control than CNN.

Wolf/dog not really the same as deer/cow

really hope that some of those dogs were chipped. Sure doesn’t look like it had been out for long.

Can you imagine the post if she’d given it a snack? “Today I trained a wolf!”

We can read. Should thought she shot a wolf puppy, but it was not. It was a dog.

She still looks like an idiot despite any press releases by anybody and despite whatever wild dogs you eradicated to protect cows. Just sayin' man.
