Saw on in the wild today. SC Highway 5, near Blacksburg. Didn't know they were actually in production.

@MacEntyre and I were eating on the patio at City BBQ. He looked up and exclaimed, ā€œHey, a Rivian!ā€. While the guy waited in the drivethru line, we chatted. Seems his was the first one in the state and he absolutely loves it.

One of the sales guys at work ordered one two years ago and finally got it a few weeks ago. It accelerates like a race car....genuinely throws your head back, but the interior build quality was really really bad. He ended up sending it back to them during the 30 day trial period and got a Raptor.

As usual, I had no idea what y'all were talking about and had to DDG it.

Didn't know this was a thing and I haven't seen one.

Anyone seen one of these actually towing something? Just curious as they seem to be more of a statement piece.

Interestingā€¦

Non-weighted / non-towing range:
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
For 2023, the R1T is offered with three different battery packs. The Standard pack is said to be good for 270 miles per charge while the Large and Max battery packs boast driving ranges of up to 352 and 400 miles, respectively.

First one I saw was about 6 months ago in Arden. Took pics of it at a red light. Seen a few since then outside Asheville.

I don't know much about them, but they look pretty cool to me.

Concept?

I see one in my neighborhood once and a while. Makes me believe it's owned by someone in the development.

At a starting price of $73k, I'll pass.

There's one parked in the corporate center in charging area across from the Huntersville PD building almost everyday. I never see him hooked up to the chargers just parked there.

My son works for Rivian as a Sen Recruiter for the design team. Loves the car, concept, and people. The people he recruits are from big auto including Porsche, BMW, MBZ. Surprised about the interior quality as that is where they usually shine. Weā€™ve heard about next gen vehicles and they are stunning. We will be replacing the BMW X with one in the near future.

Yes, saw one a few months ago at a racetrack towing an open car trailer (with a car on it). Didnā€™t get the chance to ask him about it.

Good friend of ours in Charlotte left his past jobs in the racing industry a couple years ago and went to work for Rivian in late 2021

He personally bought one of the launch editions and brought it by our house not long after a snow/ ice storm and took us for a ride in it, holy crap is that thing fast. Compress your chest fast.

interior is pretty nice as well, not spartan like a Tesla. These I took in his truck at our house, which was a pre production model

if you are regularly towing, buy a diesel. EVs clearly arenā€™t ready for that yet other than edge conditions nor is are charger networks configured for pulling in with a big trailer. I suspect they will eventually though, and when you can have something that quick that also can tow Iā€™d sign up for it.

Saw one while I was camping. It was towing a pop up camper. Would have loved to ask him specifics on how far he can go pulling the load but he was heading out as I was arriving. I know my EV loses about 20 miles off of its range when I hook up my small 2 kayak trailer to it. Feel confident it could pull a small boat at least 180 miles but thatā€™s really not what itā€™s made for.

I saw one charging about a month ago with a wave runner behind. Said he was at 90 miles towing with 28 mtd ( miles to dead) and was still about 15 miles from lake Norman.

In another victory for Musk (and a defeat for Rivian early adopters) they announced that new models will use the Tesla charge stations.

They join Ford and GM in this decision. Musk will likely end up making more money on charge infrastructure than vehicles and good for him.

Just say no. Over priced 4 wheel virtue signalling. Might have some cool mall crawler features. But don't try taking it off road. Don't tow anything as that cuts the range in half.
The company financials are not good either.
$80K minimum entry point and the company still wraps every truck sold with a $20K+ loss.
I earn a decent salary but I would never buy any vehicle at that price. Car payment plus insurance that is close to my mortgage is not on my to do list.

I'm glad Apple has not tried to get into charging stations or connectors. šŸ˜€.

I parked behind one here in Wilmington a couple days age. Had a weighted tag. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ However, the concerning part to me was what appeared to be massive condensation in some long thin part on the upper tailgate. Not what it does but if I paid that kinda money for one of these things it better have decent seals.

The intention of that trim piece on the truck is to make you take a mental inventory of what the heck you were thinking buying a $80k vehicle sight unseen from a company that can't promise they'll be open tomorrow.

You were in Apex and we didnā€™t meet for lunch? Thatā€™s just wrong. šŸ¤Ø

Was there during a gun show weekend. During your lunch, I was working. :)

If Iā€™m in Apex when I can not be working during lunch, you will be the first to know!

What I hate about pickup trucks is the quad cab. It only exists because of the fuel emission standards. Those standards donā€™t apply to a pure EV, and yet they copied the compromised design.

OTOH, itā€™s better that the Tesla super vaporware truck.

The feller said he installs charging stations, so the Rivian works well as his company car. His customers charge him up for free!

I tell you, I've been looking for a citation on this for a little while, and I haven't been able to find it. Trucks are classed by GVWR in every emission law I can find.

I saw one at a wedding that I went to in Bahama. Pretty cool trucks, but am electric truck just doesn't make sense to me.

Very interesting, the cost seems outragus to me but then I priced a New Ford Maverick this week and was quoted over $38,000 and thought that to be too much for a poor boy! Then there is the cost of maintenance and Insurance and License Tag. Who said it's expensive to live, now days?
