Is the .40 S&W going to return?

Drew Ursin used to teach the armorers course for Beretta and every course I attended, having only a hs diploma and in his typical no holds barred language, he would use a white board or chalkboard to show - mathematically - how the .40 S&W was another solution to problem that never existed …

(Still, for $160 case, I’d be BUYING more .40 cal guns!)

As soon as I use up what I’m sitting on the .40 cal Rock River* AR/pcc, Para P-16, SUB2000 and Glock 23’s are all going up on the auction block (* - the d*mn mags are worth as much as the carbine!)

$8 / box is mind blowing; best I have seen before this thread was the Speer GT Dist’s in TX had in Spring ‘23 for $15/box shipped!

That is what I am saying! I might buy a 40 just to have on hand if the ammo can be had for that cheap, even if it's just a gun that I have as a spare in the back of the cabinet, getting 1k rounds and a Glock 22 with some mags might be a good move...

Anyone actually shot .40 through a 10MM, I keep hearing it can be done but don't wanna be a guinea pig?
I hear you can burn through extractors on some but other than that would it ruin anything?
Am I totally ignorant?
Out of my G20 or G29 I love shooting 40 though them, very little to no recoil….but I do clean (needed or not) the barrel because it makes me all warm and fuzzy when I start slinging 10mm.

P16 hmmm 🤔 that’s what mine is. I like it.

Tell them CFF will take the whole lot?
@Mathieu18
I was thinking the same thing. 👌
Surely we could use a pallet (or three lol) of in house stock for our .40 equipped members.
I might be using the term "we" a bit loosely In my case.
I'm not sure, but I might be the member furthest from Carolina.
Either way, I'd be in for some.

Is the .40 S&W going to return?

Whew. I'm feeling wordy, and that's scary. I am not saying it's coming back in it's full 1990's glory, but I think, maybe, possibly, YES, it's seeing some resurgence.

I was one of 4 firearms instructors in my agency when we had been a .40 agency but considering moving to 9mm. I had read the famous letter from the FBI to "law enforcement partners" about the 9mm, with modern bullet construction, being "just as good" (copyright used with permission of Palmetto State Armory, lol 😂 ) as .40. Now right off the bat, I'd found that interesting as the federal government had just been in the news as famously buying like 8 billion rounds of FORTY CALIBER AMMUNITION. But alas, we'd just been told from ON HIGH that 9mm was just as good. MUST BE TRUE THEN, right?

I carry a 9 every day I'm off for personal concealed carry, but I was worried about 9mm being enough for POLICE DUTY when you might encounter more subjects, barriers, auto body, auto glass, etc. I had heard many reports (both fully verified and anecdotal) reports of 9mm not being enough, especially with auto body and glass. I'd been to a two day class where all we did was shot into and out of cars. I left that school, LESS impressed with 9mm and 5.56. However, I could see the writing on the wall that I was outvoted, so we went with 9mm. I've retired but stay on inactive reserve with them (working PT at another) and they have had ONE shooting to date and 1 round of 9mm put the guy down like he'd been hit with a rifle. So far so good. However, look at the videos that have became so INfamous on the news lately. I'm left speechless by the acorn officer, and am GLAD they didn't hit the prisoner (!) BUT what if he HAD been a real threat? TWO officers, MAG DUMPING 9mms (spray and pray) into the rear seat area and the so-called "target" was not hit one single, solitary time.

I had decided a month or two ago to get a G23 and go back to 40 for ONE of my off duty guns, to have an option for deep cold/heavy clothing days, and/or anticipation of going to more dangerous environs. Ammo is free for me, provided by the department by either agency I am on the books with. A good friend who is a huge gun buff and owner and shooter (but does seem to follow "trending" stuff) looked me in the eye and raised his voice asking "WHY are you not buying another 9MM???" He was actually astounded that I would buy ANYTHING other than a 9mm because of...well...the Internet.

Fast forward to buying the gun at Craig's in Concord (G23 Gen 5) and Bo (manager) and I were talking about this and I said "I guess I'm going against the grain going back to a .40" and he said that actually they had seen a slight uptick in agencies going BACK to the .40.

I was talking about it in the PD a couple weeks ago and another officer (a shooter) said HE had heard of a lot more folks talking about .40 lately.

I dont even own a .40, but at that price it is almost worth it to buy one just to get ammo that cheap.

As far as the 9mm/.40 debate...my thought is that it doesnt really matter as much as we think. Accuracy>Reliability>Caliber. If you can shoot your EDC .22lr like a laser and hit exactly what you want every single shot then its better than a .44Mag that you "might hit sometimes".

I think you want to reverse those signs. Or does Caliber Trump all?

So just to clarify, 1k .40, for approx $160, that is not available?

I'm at the decision point of whether to drive to Concord or Greensboro today and this answer will have heavy sway.

Just stopped by Dana’s. $12.99 / box for 40 Speer ball ammo and he was adamant that they would never sell to the public for less than that.
That’s really odd. I’m no longer LE nor did I represent myself as a retired LE. I did mention I work at a local community college (getting supplies for LE training was the bases of my call), I wonder if he told me that price thinking I was LE. Guys I’m sorry about getting everyone excited. I’ll call back on Monday and see if I can get clarification about his statement of $8 a box.

Eh, I guess we can let it slide.

Just this once tho 😁

Forget acorns, the two women in this truck were DELIVERING NEWSPAPERS.

Forget acorns? They should work for a different newspaper! 😉

This picture is why I want a Toyota Tacoma.

Forget acorns, the two women in this truck were DELIVERING NEWSPAPERS.

They slowed down, threw the paper on the ground. The scary sound got them lit up by eight police officers. Some crossfiring at each other.

Over 100 bullets into the truck, one occupant was hit (not incapacitated).

I recall that. During the Dorner manhunt in CA.

OK…gonna get smacked here but have never been a fan of the 40. Thought about a 10mm but if you got a 45ACP it just ain’t necessary 🧐

Lol,....he used the word, "necessary"..... :D

I happen to shoot certain guns in .40 better than others I have in 9mm.

If .40 stays cheaper than 9mm for a long time, the FBI will come up with stats as to why they switched back to .40. That, and they'll have to hire less lawyer/accountant types that think .40 recoil is too excessive.
