Mine doesn't have the eagle on the grip but otherwise looks like the same model.

I've always like the "lemon squeezer" centennials...Models 40 and 42 (Airweight) with grip safety. Today, I ended up with a 40-1 because the seller (from California) sent me the wrong gun. Yup. The wrong damned gun. I ordered a Model 42-2 (2009 production) and THIS showed up....a 40-1. The 40 and 42 are the same in every respect but composition. The 40 is a carbon steel framed revolver and a few ounces heavier than the aluminum framed Airweight 42. Generally, I prefer the Airweight. Chambered in .38 +P.

So, I got screwed right? A complete injustice, right? Nope. I dig it and the 40-1 is not common. Spoke with the seller and understand this to be a genuine mistake. He offered to accept a return on his dime or partial (small) refund if I elect to keep the gun. Took him up on the partial refund and kept the revolver. Best deal for both of us.

The gun was made in 2008. Bluing is quite nice for a modern Smith. It is essentially NIB but missing the factory grips. Replacement grips are hard to find. 40/42 take different grips than the other J Frames. The current rubber grips are wrong for this gun, but it's what I've got going on right now.

Here it is...

Here it is with a 1974 Model 42 (wood and Tyler T-Grip). Notice, the 1974 Model 42 is built on the older and smaller J Frame. The modern production 40-1 is built on the J Magnum frame / cylinder.

I remember that one well! It was a favorite of mine for several years, but last year I traded it for a pinned and recessed model 19 that looks identical.
Nice!

I couldn't get over not having a full underlug. Other than that it was darn pretty

Left Kiawah Island at 10:50 PM and got back to Charlotte at 2:35 AM. Not too bad. Very tired. This Smith & Wesson Model 64 was perfect for the beach environment and lots of walking.

First it was pink shorts and now a purse.

Come on...is somebody gonna respond? I don't know the gentleman and, therefore, don't think it should be I. :D

Don't think I've ever seen a non full lug 681 or a 686 without adjustable sights (hence 681)?

What's there to respond to?

@Prosecutor has class, and proves it more with each pic. :D

At the very least, something like, "Is that a pistol in your pocket or...?".

;)

@Prosecutor, admiring parts of your impressive revolver collection led me to a question. Since you apparently rotate your carry piece at least daily, do you keep all of them loaded? Inquiring minds wanna know (please).

@Jeppo,

Thanks. No, I do not keep them loaded. All guns in the safe are unloaded as a general rule. Usually, I unload and then use the same rounds to load the new carry gun. Sometimes have to add or remove one if going from 5 shot to 6 shot or the other way around. Unlike with semi-autos, there is no real concern about rechambering revolver rounds. Also, I usually carry .38 +P (158 gr. or 135 if Gold Dot)...doesn't matter if 40 year old Airweight J Frame or .357 capable K Frame. Ha, not sure that I have enough ammo to load them all :)

That looks very nice. You don't see many Barami grips that aren't black.

Thanks for that...makes perfect sense. I was scrolling through the thread, occasionally wiping the drool off my iPad screen, and began thinkin', "In addition to pink shorts, that guy must own a metric ****-ton of .38 ammo!".

;)

They ain't all Smiths...

...but they all want to be. :D

Joking aside, those H&R 922s are fantastic. I was lucky enough to have a 922 Sportster, 9-shot .22, pass through my house for a couple months. Bought it for my father-in-law but had to try it out first. These are a still available but often overlooked gem. Good post.

Anyone tried a set of the ugly DeSantis Clip Grips on a S&W J frame?

@Cocked & Locked I tried it. Did not like. Found the "clip" portion to be an odd angle. Also, the grip material is a very, very hard plastic.
Still got mine somewhere in the grip box. If I can find it, I'll send it to you free of charge. You can try it. If you don't like it...pass it on to somebody else. :) PM me your address. Think I can find it.

I've stuck with the Barami / Tyler combo, but some people really like the DeSantis clip grip

EDIT: Found it
