Multiple people were reportedly shot Sunday evening at the Gilroy Garlic Festival south of San Jose, Calif. Video posted on social media showed crowds fleeing gunshots, and NBC Bay Area reported ambulance crews were told there were at least 11 victims down. The shooting apparently happened close to the festival's closing time, around 6 p.m. Pacific. The annual three-day festival is one of the country's longest-running and most famous food festivals, and it popular with families.

Reports of at least 11 injured and no real info on shooter. One possible witness said “a man with a rifle ...” though. Interesting to see what comes out. I bet the liberal congressional idiots are already cutting and pasting their latest gun control bills.

You can't legislate away evil. All you can do is allow people to be able to defend themselves from evil! Unfortunately those goons in DC will only seek to further restrict our god given rights.

Because the current laws are working so well.

Because the current laws are working so well.
Current laws (all criminal acts as well as gun laws) would work sooooooo much better if the liberal biased DA’s, Judges and such would backup the LEO’s in court when those who break the existing laws are arrested. The stupid deals, plea bargains and outright plain dismals keep current laws from being effective enough to where we would not need further laws that only good law abiding citizen follow and criminals don’t ... same as it is now ... just as you said you can’t legislate it away.

2nd mass shooting in 24 hours both at festival style events. Last night in Brooklyn NY as festival was winding down possibly two shooters opened fire killing 1 person and wounding 11 others.

Now tonight in CA at another festival we have at least one shooter and reports of at least 11 injured. Watching reporting on various news outlets and one (MSNBC) described what sounded like machine gun fire was heard, sad thing when they played the video clip it was not machine gun or automatic fire it was semi auto fire.

The gun grabbers are going to have a field day with this and it happened just in time for the Democratic Presidental Debate in two days. I can't wait to hear all plans which will only further errode the rights of responsible gun owners.

Let 'em outlaw whatever they want. I'm sure that as law abiding citizens we will be the first in line to turn ours in.

I'm tired of this crap dished out one infringement at a time. The current laws are a bigger joke than the TSA, and that's saying something.

While not confirmed by the LEO’s ... a city councilman says at least 3 dead and 12 shot.

Multiple people are saying a person in fatigues was the shooter using a semi-auto rifle.

ETA ... I think it’s so ironic (or stupid) when they hear gunshots why do all these idiots pull out their cellphone and start videoing the scene rather than head for cover? Freakin’ idiots o_O

"witness to the shooting told KTVU reporter Elissa Harrington that he heard at least 50 shots. A second witness described the sounds of the shooting as a "machine gun."

This is also being reported by the Associated Press as well. I can already hear the calling for a ban on almost all guns as well as strict laws like NY and CA already have in place for all states. What they fail to realize is those laws stopped nothing. Criminals don't obey laws.

No law(s) past, present or future will stop a person who wants to kill you with a firearm, vehicle, blade, bare hands or a baseball bat, etc etc.
Laws are tools for the prosecution after the crime(s) have been committed.

It’s interesting to think about how we got to where we are today with something like 90% of all cases being resolved by a plea agreement. It didn’t used to be like this, but as a community we got tired of judges giving lite sentences and so we legislated mandatory minimums. All of a sudden the accused gets to choose between taking the deal that the prosecutor proposes in their sole discretion, or going to court on more severe charges with mandatory sentencing. It’s probably more efficient, but it’s a little bent to have one office have this much power. Unintended consequences.

The festival, now in its 41st year, is a local tradition that attracts thousands annually. It was wrapping up its third and final day when reports of the shooting came in.
Can you say soft target? Anyone noticing a pattern here? News on TV right now saying he cut through a fence to gain access. So much for the viability of metal detectors.

Officers engaged the suspect and killed him within a minute.

Witnesses reported seeing a second gunman, and as of 11:30 p.m. the scene was still active, with multiple agencies searching for the outstanding suspect, according to Gilroy police.
One, this sort of response time from the cavalry is nearly unprecedented, at least if one looks at it from the standpoint of not being already nearby or on scene. This just goes to show how quickly these things can go down. If the bad guy wants to hurt people, he will and the only thing you can do is mitigate their ability as quickly as possible.

Two, I could see the libtards trying to spin this to say that even having armed people present is pointless, therefore only the cops should have guns.
Didn't someone call this recently?
Funny how that happens. Becoming as much of a coincidence as Clintoncide, especially at convenient times and under suspicious circumstances, like this mysterious second suspect.

OK, my psychic abilities are unmatched. If there are two people involved then it's either LEFT or ISLAM. If the story fades we will know. The guy was wearing a bandana around his neck. We don't do much of that.

What we know:

Another “gun free” (victim disarmament) zone:
“People attending the festival must pass through metal detectors and security before getting into the park.”
“Chief of Police Smithee said the gunman gained access to the festival by cutting through a fence near a creek area.”
So, as usual, the only people that were unarmed were the victims.

“Cops confronted the gunman within a minute and shot him dead, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said.”
Yet another bad guy with a gun stopped by a good guy with a gun.

“— but are still on the hunt for another possible suspect. “We believe there was a second individual involved in some way,” Smithee said…..”
A planned act of terror not some random lone crazy gun nut.

California is one of the most gun controlled states in America:
https://lawcenter.giffords.org/gun-laws/state-law/california/
STATE LAW BACKGROUND

Among other things, California:

Requires all gun sales to be processed through a licensed dealer, requiring a background check;
Requires gun dealers to obtain a state license;
Bans most assault weapons and .50 caliber rifles, and restricts the sale, transfer, manufacture, and possession of large capacity ammunition magazines;
Requires all firearms purchasers to obtain a Firearm Safety Certificate, after passing a written test;
Regulates gun shows in a comprehensive manner;
Limits purchases of new handguns to one per person per month;
Prohibits the sale of unsafe handguns that do not incorporate mandatory design safety elements;
Imposes a ten-day waiting period prior to the sale or transfer of a firearm;
Maintains permanent records of firearm sales;
Gives local law enforcement discretion to deny a license to carry a concealed weapon; and
Gives local governments authority to regulate firearms and ammunition, although the state legislature has expressly removed this authority in certain areas.
In addition, in 2014, California became the first jurisdiction in the nation to enact a Gun Violence Restraining Order law (also known as a Firearms Restraining Order or Extreme Risk Protection Order), allowing concerned family members to petition a court to temporarily remove firearms from a love one who is found to pose a clear danger to the public or their own safety during a mental crisis.

In 2016, California voters also adopted a comprehensive package of gun safety reforms through Proposition 63 (“The Safety for All Act of 2016”). Among other major reforms, Proposition 63 will, when implemented, make California the first state in the nation to require a point-of-sale background check on ammunition purchases.

In 2017, California had the seventh lowest gun death rate among the nation’s 50 states. Even with this relatively low ranking, California still suffered 3,184 deaths from firearms in that single year. Additionally, in 2014, at least 5,724 people were hospitalized or treated in emergency rooms for non-fatal gunshot wounds in California.

In 2017, California supplied crime guns to other states at the fifth lowest rate among the states.

Municipalities across California have also enacted a variety of gun violence prevention ordinances to make their communities safer.

From an article I read on this in the morning on the Huffpost rag:

A band called TinMan had just begun its encore performance when the gunman opened fire, according to The Associated Press. Members of the band told the news outlet that they heard several gunshots and dove under the stage for protection.

The band’s singer, Jack van Breen, said he heard someone shout: “Why are you doing this?”

“Because I’m really angry,” came the reply.

Now on SFChronicle, some choice quotes:

"A gunman with an assault-type rifle opened fire."

"white male in his 20s wearing a camouflage uniform and hat with a long rifle with removable clips"

"The gunman wore a “sheriff-type outfit” and was armed with what appeared to be a semiautomatic rifle, the teenager said."

"The violence in Gilroy is among the few hundred mass shootings in the U.S. each year, generally defined as killing or injuring four or more people."

"Notably, federal law still allows private-party sales without background checks, known as the gun-show loophole.

Our country has a gun violence epidemic that we cannot tolerate,” tweeted Sen. Kamala Harris."

Well, at least the dems won't have to think too hard on what to use in the debate when the evil guns are brought up. Convenient, isin't it?

They realized playing the race card was coming up short and needed to get Cummings and other things out of the news cycle.

*whistles innocently* pay no attention to the man/men behind the curtain... look a mass shooting!

among the few hundred mass shootings in the U.S. each year,

Really!! Every other day (at best, by their claim) is a mass shooting in the US? Do people really believe this crap

Chicago is 80% of those, but they don't count since it's all illegal crap.

I don't know about the Gilroy case but the one in Brooklyn was in the same 'hood that was dumping buckets of water on cops trying to do their jobs. I would bet my last dollar that the Brooklyn shooting was gang related.

And still no one cares about the homicides in Chicago:
Last Week’s Totals (7/21 – 7/27)
Shot & Killed: 12
Shot & Wounded: 59
Total Shot: 71
Total Homicides: 13

A little perspective about Gilroy from someone I know who lives in the general area:

“I have attended the Garlic festival. I lived and worked down there for a year. This event has been tightly controlled for years. You have to park elsewhere and get bused in. Controlled entrances with security everywhere. Massive police presence. Horse back, bikes, on foot.....cops are everywhere. This event closes early (7 pm) every night.
Now, let me explain why the short hours, and the big police presence. The area and surrounding area is full of hard working, well off financially, second and third generation Hispanics. Mixed in is all the gang members. This festival has always drawn trouble with the gangs. They would strike at night so now it closes well before dark. Bad folks from Hollister, Salinas, San Jose, Watsonville, Santa Nella, Gilroy, San Martin.....they all get together and bad things happen. Just like anywhere in the country the good folks have to deal with the gang members that have been let run wild by the liberal policies in place. The gang members in that area are a blend of illegals/ farm laborer kids from south of that area to punk kids of the good upstanding folks that have made that area their home.”

Let's just hope (not that it really matters) that this assclown didn't use a binary trigger with a brace on an AR pistol.
