No, the caller shouldn't have been saying anything to the dispatcher. He should have only requested an ambulance, nothing more. Let the ambulance call the police if they chose to. The shooter should have remained silent until he retained a criminal attorney. There'll be plenty of time to draft a statement later, but under the emotion of the time of the incident he is not going to helping himself by running his mouth. I have read constant accounts where the the shooter convicts himself with his mouth. Never make a statement before you have legal counsel.

Warning shots are not in my bag of tricks. I will say that my grandfather (he died in 1931) used to go out in the evening and fire off a round or two out of the old double barrel to let the local scum know that they were not welcome. He was sick one day and did not fire off the rounds as usual. Several of the local maggots took that as a signal that the chickens were unguarded and decided to help themselves. The dogs started barking, and my grandmother came out with the shotgun and dusted a few britches with bird shot as they ran away. That solved the problem for a while. I suppose my grandmother would have been put in jail if she did that these days.

“I’m at Motts Landing and I got a Mexican running at me right now. I’m about to shoot him." I predict a lawsuit against the shooter alleging racial bias. Yes, I know, Mexico is a country, not a race, but I also read liberal news. The shooter is lucky he is in New Hanover country, relatively conservative compared to some other parts of the country. Had this occurred up north or in California he would already be charged with a hate crime and remanded.

Later, Barton told reporters, “I did what Joe Biden told me to do. I went outside and fired my shotgun in the air.”
Barton was originally charged with a misdemeanor for illegally discharging a firearm, but in August prosecutors dismissed that charge and instead leveled one of obstructing a police officer.
Allegedly, when police officers arrived at the scene, Barton did not cooperate with officers’ commands.
Barton’s attorney told local media that his client was cooperative but incensed because the officers told everyone to show their hands, which was “not a polite greeting.”

To be fair, the discharging of a gun charge was dropped, so the Biden defense may work. His remaining charge was obstructing a police officer. He obviously was rather arrogant, refusing to show his hands because that was not a polite greeting. That's a hell of an excuse for disobeying a police officer. Concealing his hands could have gotten him shot by a jumpy cop, they were answering a shots fired call, after all. My favorite Presidential defenses are the sexual assault excuses from the Clinton era, but this is the wrong forum for that discussion.
 
He was extremely fortunate that they dropped the illegal discharge charge. He clearly strayed from Biden’s instructions which called for precisely “two blasts”.

I wish whoever was interviewing him would have called him on it. I would have said, "If I was a criminal, once you fired two blasts from your double barreled shotgun, I would be all over you because you are now defenseless. What are you going to do then?"
