"..will do what you just did."
Says the gun store employee, as he hands me a new G48 to fondle.
When he handed me the gun, I pointed it in a safe direction, removed the mag, cleared it several times, reinserted the mag, cleared it again.
I knew what he meant. The other 9 people just grab the gun and start waving it around. I gotta admit, after a month of customers sweeping me with these damn things I'd get pretty testy about it too.

Jeeze, so much extra effort. Waddya worried about?

I would think a qualified gun store employee would remove the mag and hand you the weapon with the action open. Guess you need a new gun store. ;)

Most places that I have been to will remove mag, clear weapon, insert mag and give to me. Then I do the same thing to double check while pointing in safe direction. Don't really get why people must muzzle sweep you all the time though in shops. is it really that hard to pick a safe spot to point the stupid gun?

One thing about Jim's range/gun store....they check things several times, and I've never been handed any gun in any way other than open and magazine removed. And then I point them down and away from anyone and check them for myself. After which the fondling can begin!! I feel safe there!
(Except for it being in Fayetteville, that is!)

I went into a pawn shop and asked the good looking sales girl behind the counter to show me a revolver. She handed it to me as you would a knife - handle first. Muzzle pointing at her navel. I just asked her to put it on the counter...

This is what we did. He cleared it, I watched, I cleared it too.
He's a 1911 guy. Pretty much considers Glocks the equivalent of a hammer.
But the gun was better than I thought. It's different, but in a curious way.

I got so used to it, I didn't even blink anymore unless they pulled the trigger.

I also used to remove the mag and clear stuff before I handed it to people after a while.

I HATE it when they hand it to me with the action closed!!! I always hand it back to them with the action open so they can see that it is clearly unloaded, but they don’t seem to even notice

and it doesn’t just seem to be the “bad“ shops that do this.

Its a bit awkward with a long gun when a place is crowded. I just keep the muzzle pointed at the ground as much as possible and ditto on receiving and returning presentation. Its good practice that turns into a good habit.

Please do not do this at home folks, he is a trained professional.

IIRC he sued the gun store for negligence. I lived about an hour down the road from where this happened in KY at the time. It was all over the local news. He was on duty and not even in his jurisdiction. He was fired as a result of the video.

Would you blame the store or yourself ? I think I would be mad at both..

I think that the store had some liability but if I was on that jury and watched the video his gun handling was so negligent I would have not awarded him a penny. He sweeps everyone to his left several times. He puts his finger in front of the barrel multiple times before shooting himself. He puts his finger in the bang switch having never checked the gun himself. He had several opportunities to clear the gun before he shot himself. He is just as liable for the discharge as the shop IMHO.

When I am handed a gun in or outside a shop if the action is not already open and clear I open and clear the gun before doing anything else. If a mag is present that is the first thing that is removed. I then clear and check the weapon. I also always ask permission to dry fire or function check the gun. If the gun is put into my hands it is my responsibility to make sure it is safe and that I am handing it safety.

When I am working in the LGS, I will rack the slide and check the gun clear, always - BUT - I will make sure I hand it to you WITH the empty mag in place. Why?

Well, back in the day, in New York gunshops (Yes we had gunshops in NY where you could handle guns many decades ago ;) ) miscreants would come in and have a loaded mag in their pocket. They would ask to see a model pistol that their loaded mag fit and when it was handed to them, they would insert their loaded mag and then rob and/or kill the shop employees.

Happened many times. Won't ever happen to me. ;) YMMV. My 0.02 Regards 18DAI

One of the oldest gun shops in the US is still in NYC, near little Italy. Can’t remember the name, was there before Christmas.

The mag had to have been loaded with rounds when the gun was handed to the cop. I can't see where the cop did anything to the gun besides racking the slide before it went off. Yeah, the cop was not handling the gun safely, but the store and clerk were at fault.

Happened to me today in a local gun shop. I was talking with an employee, customer clueless comes in wanting to see an AR pistol. Second employee gets it off the rack and hands it to him and he proceeds to sweep me with the muzzle. I start moving back and forth trying to keep clear. Drives me nuts, I don't understand why it is so hard to not point a gun at someone!
