Hey all,

I have a 10/22 that I would like to use as a suppressor host. Unfortunately, I did not plan ahead when I bought the rifle 8 years ago and I have a non-threaded standard 18 inch model, with tech sights installed.

I have done the math and I am torn between buying a new threaded barrel, or biting the bullet, and getting my existing barrel threaded. There is still life in the existing barrel. As far as my research has shown, the prices are about the same, unless I get a good deal on the smithing.

What does the hive mind think? New, factory threaded barrel, or thread my existing barrel?

Thanks!

What are your plans for the rifle?
High accuracy? Buy a threaded barrel with a Bentz chamber. Someone recently mentioned a Green Mountain barrel for ~$100.
Just want to plink? Find a used or threaded barrel on sale.

I had a standard 10/22 barrel threaded by a member of one of the previous iterations of the forum. He was running a smithing operation out of his garage. My wimpy little 10/22 was the least expensive barrel in that shop. I forget the guys name. I always think it was @kcult for some reason. But it wasn’t. Guy named Scott, I think. It was like 10+ years ago.

Anyway, he told me it was going to be tough as they don’t leave much meat on the barrel to thread. He successfully pulled it off but gave it back to me with a warning to not put a (edit) can on it. It was just to mount a flash hider as I was building an AR clone (before the days of the dedicated 22lr AR’s that are so prolific now).

That’s my input: you can thread if if the smith/metal worker is good. But a can may be too much for the resulting threads as there’s not much support there. Probably best to get a factory threaded barrel.

Mostly just plink, good accuracy out to 75-100 yards or so is all I need. I have no issue getting that now with my 10/22, and my buddy has a suppressed Ruger American that is a freaking tack driver. If I ever become obsessed with .22 grouping I will likely get a Ruger or CZ bolt gun.

Thanks for the advice!

I found it on the Canadian’s site. It was a member named K.Lee who did my barrel threading. Don’t know if he’s still around here or made any of the great forum migrations.

Thanks, I have a guy in mind but I think I'm going to look for a used threaded barrel first. I will see if I can track down K. Lee if things don't work out.

Your memory ain't horrible.

I had shared the story about a local machine shop cutting off and threading the barrel for my M&P 15-22 SBR.

I think Kyle was over here for a while in the beginning. But I haven't seen him in a long time. He was a competitive LR shooter and it was with his gun that I hit my first 1000yd target with. (X3 actually)

I went through this a while back. Posted a wtb ad here for a threaded barrel and had one same day
I did the exact same thing here. Took a little more than one day but not long. Fellow member had upgraded his 10/22 Tactical to a bull barrel and that original barrel was exactly what I needed and for a lot less hassle and $ than getting mine threaded.

What do you think is a reasonable price for a used, threaded, original barrel? $75-100?

I have a PWS carbon fiber tension barrel that I’m not using. If you want you could try it before you buy it and if you wanted it, I’d make you a good deal on it. It’s just sitting in. Safe not being used. Shoot me a pm if interested.

are you planning to keep the tech sights or go with a scope/red dot? that will determine what your options are. most aftermarket barrels won't accept the tech sights. Also - I'm not sure if there is enough material to thread OEM and keep your front sight - something to think about.

I went thru this recently. Cheapest I found to have it threaded was about $150. Way too much to invest in the "good enough" factory barrel.

You can buy a brand new one already threaded for less then that and it will perform better.

I ended up grabbing a threaded carbon fiber barrel on ebay for less then half the quote for threading.

Thanks, this seems to be the common consensus. Did the barrel fit your standard stock (if you have a standard stock)? Optimally I'd like to have it threaded and be able to accomodate my iron sights and fit my standard barrel. Thats a lot of ands.

Mine is a bull barrel profile but I already had one of the Magpul stocks that accommodates both barrels.

10/22's tend to snowball...

I bought a Federsen barrel with fiber optic sight for about same money. I needed to sand out the stock to fit but once done converts a stock 10/22 to very capable host
