I have had the itch for a 1911 in 9mm. I want the alloy frame to reduce weight. In my price range, I have been looking at Ruger and Springfield Armory in both the Commander size and officer sized pistols. Right now, I am leaning Ruger but not decided yet. Is the officer size good to go? I have heard of reliability problems with the shorter barrel vs the longer commander barrel. It seems as I am getting older, I am more interested the types of pistols I started out with.

@fieldgrade has a lot of experience with 1911 9mm. Maybe he can help with your question.

Words to live by, in setting your expectations with that caliber in that platform.
Understanding that going in, is the longer commander size more viable or does it really not matter.

A 9mm 1911 in even full size 5” will be incrementally less reliable, in my humble experience.

I am not all the smart, but I have learned to buy 1911’s in 45 acp and buy my 9 mm’’s in CZ and Beretta. Since I’ve done that I’ve had zero issues. But you coukd get lucky.

I have both of the Ruger 9’s, 4” and 3.25” (I think). Love them both. If you happen to be near Fayetteville, holla…..you can try them both out on the range behind my shop
