2-1/2 410 in a 2-3/4

As Diehard said.
So why 2 1/2” and 3” 410 shells anyway?
I have run into older (pre 50s) HR single barrel 410s with 2 9/16” chambers. May be the reason for 2 1/2” shells?
Correct me if I’m wrong.
When I was growing up in the 50s, I shot a lot of 2 1/2 #7s in my Stevens 94 410 3” chamber. They were cheaper and the squirrels didn’t seem to care.

2-1/2 is the only length that works in my .410
