2023-24 edition animal harvest pic thread.

I haven’t had the chance to hunt at all until last week. I went twice last week and saw some small does and a few different small bucks but I held out they were a little bit out of my comfort zone range wise with 300 black out.

My girlfriend tagged along yesterday evening for her first time hunting and wasn’t prepared for how cold it was. (I tried to tell her…) We saw a 6 point early but the way I had her set up on the gun/tripod she couldn’t get on him and we saw some other deer way out in the other side of the fieId but was too dark to tell what was what. She slept in this morning so I went by myself and shot this doe.

I have always shot deer inside 100-120 yards with 300 blk but I was getting antsy and they weren’t getting any closer. I aimed about 2” above her left ear and she dropped right there. 300 blackout will get it done at this range apparently but I plan to use a different caliber next year (thinking 12” 6mm arc sbr but that’s a different discussion) and let my gf use the 300 blk. I stepped it off at 235 paces which looking back was reckless and I should not have taken the shot but I justified it in my head at the time being 95% sure a head shot would ring the bell or hit dirt. She fell right there but was not dead. I got up once I saw her kicking around and ended her suffering.

Also I realized I need to get some metal sides, a door, and some windows put on my box stand that NNE wind yesterday afternoon was brisk.

I didn’t get any close up pics. She was pretty gory looking after taking that head shot. I’m done for the year I still have deer from last year. I try not to shoot more than we’ll eat in a year

Anyone having excess deer they want taken, I'm looking for places to hunt, preferably within an hour of 27041
My uncle does but he is finicky about who hunts there. He see 15-20 does every time he goes. I’ll probably be going one day to shoot one more before the end of season.

On that note if anyone reads this and wants some deer meat then we can probably provide quite a bit. But you are responsible for coming to get it, cleaning and processing

Got these guys ( #1,6pts #2, 5pts) with the smoke stick about 10 days ago. First one walked up and gave me a nice broadside at about 50 yds. Waited 15 minutes and while walking to it the other guy showed about 40yds out. Ducked behind a tree to reload. Can't believe that he didn't see me with all the fidgeting going on to pour measure stuff ram and cap. He turned broadside too. Both only walked about 20yds and dropped. Long day afterwards. Rifle is Wolf 50 cal. using a .45 sabot 240 JHP over 90 guns pyrodex.

For some reason this is how I picture all that going down

He’s been just a minute too early or a few minutes too late all season. Last night he slipped up and came out into the soybeans with 10 minutes to spare!

Nice one!

What caliber you shooting over those beans if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you! I got him with an old cheap Wal-Mart Savage Axis in 6.5 Creedmore, shooting Hornady 143g ELD-X. Almost 100 yards away. He was quartering toward me slightly and I tuck it in the back side of his shoulder. Stood up on his back legs and made it about 30 yards before expiring.

Was hunting this evening in V.A. Had small doe come out in field for an hour then this guy showed up. I shot him with my 308 and then this doe just stood around so I dropped her. Probably my last hunt of the year. When I looked to my left getting out of my stand several more does were in the field.

What a spectacular morning!

Weather was awesome!

I was hunting a farm where they want everything shot.

This is the 3rd doe I've killed there this season. Every time I've thought, "this is the biggest doe I've ever killed". But they keep getting bigger each time! This morning was no exception.

Took the heart out and threw it on the fire-bowl as a snack before I even finished cleaning the deer.

And who doesn't have Blanton's for brunch on special hunt mornings?! Commies?! 😜

Special day hanging out with special friends. Don't get no better!

The boy got to come in from Germany and helped fill the freezer with a fat doe

He blew the stuffing out of her. Feathers everywhere! lol

Unrelated to the above smart comment, I eased into the thicket for my end of the year ground hunt. Had 2 come in before daylight that I'm pretty sure were bucks. Very heavy walk and they were grunting back and forth. Then about 8 a doe came off the ridge to my right. I set up for a shot thinking she would hold that line, cross the gully, and come up the other side where I had a shot. Nope. She came up the gully and popped her head out of the gully about 10 yards away, about 1:00 to my right. I never saw her but based on the sound she nearly cut a backflip trying to get away.

Although we could technically hunt tomorrow, I think we're done for the season.

My SIL, his son, and myself (I, me?) all took a doe tonight. What a way to end the season!

The only decent pic is of the 13 year old's deer.

Here's the only one of mine.

300blk to the neck.
