And so it begins. Planted 4 beds (16 rows) of onions. Have some red, white, and yellow. I'll get a picture tomorrow and post while the sun is out.

Wanted to start some pepper seeds too, but ran out of steam after helping with a move yesterday. Maybe some afternoon this week, as that's an inside job.

I was going to get the breaking plow out the last week but I’ve been too busy pruning and planting trees. This week I’m working on irrigation for blackberries. Hopefully I will get the bushes in the ground this next weekend.

I’ve got to start getting mine cleaned out. Having to take care of my mom after she hurt herself last year negated us having a garden. It’s a mess

I need to get a garden started this year.

I was hoping someone would do a 2024 garden thread. Thanks

My garden is still too wet to till, without making a huge mess anyway

I think i've settled on what to plant and a layout, I think.

Question: I want to plant corn, not much, just for a couple of meals and maybe a few packs for the freezer. I don't have enough space for much.

Last year, just on a whim and fairly late, I planted Silver Queen on the end of the garden, along the fence. Surprisingly it grew well and produced a lot for the number of plants I had,

I'd like to try a different variety this year. Any recommendations for The Charlotte area? Sweet, good eating corn, yellow or white.

serendipity is good, I plant the BT/roundup ready version of it. It’s bicolor and has a balance of between the sweetness of white and flavor of yellow.

I'm going to plant some tomato seeds around Valentines day. If you plant them too early, they get too spindly inside. I save 20 oz styrofoam cups from take out orders, punch a couple holes in the bottom for drainage and put a couple inches of potting mix in them to start. As the plants get taller, I continue to add more potting mix until the cup is full. Then plant them about a foot deep in my raised beds.

How old of seeds have you guys planted and they still come up? I always saved my leftover seed in the freezer and have quite a bit that is around 20 years old that I need to see if they will still germinate. I used to plant a big garden, but now just plant in a couple raised beds, so I have all the left over seed.

I planted collard seed I found in an old freezer at our old barn (still running) that were dated 1983, so almost 40 years old when I planted them in 2020. It was seed my grandfather had kept harvesting through the years, old cabbage collards. My grandmother said he had gotten the original plants in the late 40s early 50s.

I have some white pickling cucumber seeds that supposedly have been passed down in my family for 200 years. My great grandmother would plant a hill of cucumbers with 3 or 4 cucumber seeds and 2 cotton seeds. The red ground would get so hard that the sprouted cotton seeds would break the crust allowing the cucumbers to come up. She would then pull up the cotton plants. She would leave the cucumber closest to the root to mature and that is the only one she would save the seed from.

I got one raised box built the other day. I have enough metal to do one more. I have never had a real garden before. Grew a lot of “plants” in college so it should be like riding a bike. I don’t remember what my length ending up being. I think they were 10’ panels 3’ wide. I cut them into thirds king ways and then cut two of those in half so if my math is right they’re 5’x10’. I’ll be asking a lot of newb questions. When is the best time to fill them with dirt? I laid cardboard down to kill the grass and put a bunch of leaves and stuff I raked up in the yard but not sure if I should get soil now or wait.

Last year. The bulk "potting/raised bed" mix I bought, needs about a year to compost and break down. Stuff didn't want to grow in it the first year.

What kind of soil do I need to buy? I calculated I need 3.7 yards but I think I can get away with 3 yards with the compost in the bottom. If possible I'd like to buy some ready to go if there's such a thing?

Is this what I need?

I'm not familiar with that variety, I'll have to check it out

Anyone have experience with Honey and Pearl?

Efforts here slowly chugging to life. I've started the peppers that need the longest growing season, plus a few cool season crops that I wanted to try transplanting this year. Also put a new motor on the rototiller to replace the one I broke last year. Next time we get a long dry spell I'll try to get the ground turned over.

Put together the seed starting trays. The dirt pellets are neat. Add water and they expand.

Six bins of six peppers. Have aji charapita, Lesya, trepadeira werner, and three kinds of regular bell (didn't do any last year).

Onions and garlic are doing nicely.

And it looks like cabbage may be growing in the background.

@noway2, where did you get your seed starting trays?
Amazon. Guioiby brand. You’re supposed to be able to squeeze the bottoms and remove the plants without disturbing or destroying the roots. They should also be reusable if you clean them well.

How did you germinate the seeds?
Put the seeds in a moist paper towel in a sealed zip lock bag and placed it on top of the refrigerator, where is stays a little warmer than the house. Checked them after 6 days and this is how many sprouted.

100# potatoes, 5# garden peas, 10M Beets. Time to get rolling.

@Jimbob78

When you say garden peas do you mean green peas?

After they've finished for the year, do you plant something in their place?

The sweet peas. I usually just pick the first go round then disc them under. I’m playing on about 3 acres so I don’t have to plant where they are. I’m usually finished planting everything by early April at the latest. Then in July I’ll start my collards cabbage and broccoli for the winter

LOL, I wish I had that kind of garden, my whole yard is just 1/3 acre.

So I plant something like green beans or bok choy and when they're done I plant something else.

I try to max my little garden

I plant too much. I end up giving more away than I keep, but I work under the theory that if I plant just enough, it won’t work out well and if I plant too much, I’ll have a bumper crop.
