I'm going to sell my Savage 110 Elite Precision in 6mm Creedmoor, don't have the scope or range to really use it.

So why not a 223? It's capable of 600 yards, I can cut my teeth on reloading.

Now. Which one? I'm leaning Ruger American Predator, and changing it to a chassis stock. But I'm not sure if I want to be held to the coal of the AR mag.

I just went through this process. Completely new to anything past a couple hundred yards.

I kept coming back to the Tikka CTR and have one en route right now. Mags are expensive and have limitations on coal, but I’m starting to see there are some cheaper aftermarket options that improve on this.

Mossberg MVP gets my vote runs on ar mags
Super accurate
It's my favorite bolt gun
I have the same opinion. It’s a beautiful rifle too. Wood stock and all. Lots of fun!

Why not swap the bolt head in the Savage and get a .223 barrel and just swap it on the rifle you have? That way you still have the 6mm if needed and you can shoot the .223 and load for it too.

The RAP is a fine rifle for the $. If I was wanting to get into something that'll shoot small groups it wouldn't be my choice. I would go with a CZ or Tikka if you didn't want to do a custom build.

hadn't thought that hard about that idea

You should. Cost would be about the same as buying a new rifle before having to replace the stock and you will end up with a better rifle overall as you will have a better barrel than a factory barrel. Just buy some MDT .223 mags and you can load out to 2.550” with heavy bullets.

I'm liking this more and more. Now trying to figure out barrel length, contour, and what not, lol.

I would say get something similar to the 6 Creed barrel for contour if you like the feel. A 26” .223 is nice as you can get some good velocity without pushing super hard. My match .223 is 27”. A .223 Wylde chamber is good all around. 7 twist if you plan to shoot some heavies but I wouldn’t go slower than 8. Go have some fun. Lol

Wylde is what I have been leaning, its what my 18" ar is in, I shoot suppressed, so I was considering a 20-24" barrel with a Medium Palma contour.

I will likely shoot 68-77 gr bullets.

( too be honest, if this goes well and I get out and shoot a ton, I will likely switch to 6 Dasher realm of barrels)

Definitely Wylde. More versatile.

one of the things that drives me nuts, wylde is a compromise to allow 556 and 223 to be shot out of the same barrel, its what i have on my 18" ar.

wouldn't a 223 be a tighter lock up and thus tighter groups? or just fire form and run the 75s?

also twist rate of 1/7 vs 1/8, 1/8 would prob be fine for the 75s and allow down to 55s.

then the other factor, do I need 24", or would 20" with some freebore from the can be good for out to 600ish?

.223 Rem has a shorter freebore. With heavier bullets having a little longer freebore and not sticking a lot of the bullet down in the case is a good thing. As I said I have a Wylde chamber in my match .223 and shoot 75s out to 1150 yards. With the AICS mags having a longer freebore doesn’t hurt either as you can get a longer oal.

8 twist will work with the 75/77. If you plan to shoot a good amount of 55 also then go 8.

Freebore boost isn’t a given so don’t count on it. 20” will definitely get you to 600 though. If you wanted to keep it shorter then go 20”.

I was thinking the Wylde chamber was created for AR-15 to be able shoot safely 556 or 223.

A lot of people like them but I stayed standard .223 so I can shoot it in Tac division for matches. .223 AI puts you in open. If you didn’t care and wanted some more velocity then the AI wouldn’t be bad. It’s easy to fireform as you just shoot regular .223 through them. People I know who have them say they are accurate that way too.

223 would be better to cut my teeth vs variants. Where do you shoot competitions at?

5,56 chambers already do that. IIRC the Wylde chamber is a compromise that will still shoot either but with less freebore than 5.56 so supposedly better accuracy.

Ruger American Predator, already threaded and shorter barrel than the Mossberg (if I remember correctly)
