223 bolt actions

McGowen, Shilen, Preferred…

No clue, no one has anything in stock I’ve found so far
prefit, would have to find a smith otherwise, though it might be easier to just to send it off
Have you called James at Northland Shooter Supply? He carries both Criterion and Shilen pre-fits for Savage actions. If he has any in stock they will probably be 26", which is a nice length for a .223Rem.

I have both Shilen and Criterion barrels on several of my bolt guns. I honestly have not seen much of a difference between them accuracy wise as both are sub half MOA and were stupid easy to load develop for.

Just off the phone with @Michael458 , he was telling me he Just finished a .223 bolt with an 18 inch barrel. Maybe he'll chime in and help out.
Mine is a Winchester Model 70 with a 16 1/2 inch barrel and an AI Snow camo stock.....come shoot it if you can.
Yeah, I don't know about being any help with this conversation, my bolt guns are all Winchesters, and all basic 223.........I shoot one bullet, mostly for terminal effects and that is the 50 Raptors...... if they shoot other bullets well, then its just bonus, but 50 Raptors are mandatory.

From time to time I would pick up those older Winchesters in 223, and unfortunately all of them are just push feed guns, but work good enough. They make good conversion guns for 300 BLK, and 7.62X40. I have one 16 inch 300 BLK that I use for pressure work, and two 7.62X40s one mine, also used for pressure work, and the other I built for my Daughter to hunt local game with, excellent little round. The rest I would keep in 223, but all the barrels have to be changed out, they are all old 1:14 twist rates, way way too slow......... I have 1:8 twist match barrels put on them.

This is the latest gun I just got in last week....... I bought this gun from a late friend, it was a big long heavy barrel varmint gun, 26 inches, had a big stupid varmint stock..... basically all that I used was the action, since the barrel was not any good to start with. New match 1;8 twist 18 inch barrel and Ultimate stock........ Gun is a little heavy with the 1X10 Nikon at 8.5 lbs........but handles and feels pretty good regardless........... Just put the scope on it Saturday, have not had time to sight in or shoot yet.........

Emailed them

They have a 26" 1/7 coming in later this month.

I've considered the 224 valkyrie ar upper and keeping this as 6 creed.

So to think it over

I recently bought a Tikka CTR In 223. 1-8 twist from the factory. Dropped it in a used XLR element I bought for a song. Loaded up with 75 ELDMs it’s a hammer. It actually shoots everything well. One of the most accurate factory rifles I’ve owned. E30F6A9A-12D4-4793-97C5-DD1BFF34270A.jpegBest firearm investment I’ve made in a while. I love shooting a 223 bolt gun.

If you're looking for a barrel blank on a budget you can look up raggedholebarrels.com. I believe they are 190 shipped. The light varmint is a smidgen bigger than a rem varmint. I have a 223 reamer in the shop with a .093 freebore and a throater.

I have used a number of their barrels on prs practice guns and hunting guns. Everyone has produced sub moa groups.

Sold the Savage, so now I have the money to start back on this.
Pacific tool and gauge had a lot of rem 700 receivers at decent prices. Not a steal but not crazy. I've got one left and I've been looking for replacements for that one. Years back I bought a bunch from grabagun years $260 per receiver.

Match one of these with a Remage barrel of your choice, fiberglass stock, and Geissele Super 700 stage trigger for around $1200 and it should do everything you want it to do and then some.

One advantage of buying a receiver that hasn't been in a stock and no barrel is that if you wanted to build a pork sword or anything else with a brace or XP-100 you can legally as it never had a stock on it from the factory.
