I have been looking into the .277 Wolverine conversion for my AR. I have done my own research and I would just like to see if anyone in here owns one or has ever shot one.

I’ve never shot one, but I followed it for awhile on 68Forums until they sold out to the same Canadians we’ve grown to despise. Looks like a great round.

Thanks for the input I figured if I asked on here someone would have some kind of input for me.

I also like the caliber because I would not have to change the bolt or magazines so it would be a cheaper alternative that going 6.8 spc.

Fair warning, I love my 6.8 SPC rifles and have been deer hunting with them in the midwest for 10 years so take this input with that in mind. If you are going to hunt, and you are willing to have separate mags for this upper, why not go with the 6.8? Many good factory hunting rounds available. Better performance.

Fair enough. If you have an extra bolt laying around that makes sense. But if you have to buy a bolt anyway, not a big deal. I hunt with 10 round mags anyway to having separate ones for my 6.8 is no biggie.

I totally get the appeal of "shared parts" but in reality FOR ME, there isn't really much value there considering the tradeoffs made. Just my $0.02.

My neighbor hunts with the 6.8 also and has great success with it. I have limited funds and was thinking if I could get away with just a barrel and spare parts I have around the house I could get close to the same performance as the 6.8 without have to spend the extra money.

Can I ask what are the trade offs ? This is why I wanted to bring it up here before making a purchase . I don’t know a lot about the 6.8 so I am just seeing what is the general thought of the subject.

To me it is simply ammo selection and performance. If you are buying factory ammo, 6.8 has a slew of good hunting options (and I happen to have a few thousand rounds of XM68GD for both target/practice and hunting). If you are reloading, there is more top end performance capability with the 6.8 just simply due to the capacity difference. If you are wanting to shoot subsonics, the hat tip is to the WLV as there is more support for that option than there is with the 6.8. Again, just the way I see it. For me, the benefits of the 6.8 over the WLV FOR HUNTING far exceed the additional cost of a new mag (I consider the bolt a wash since you have to buy one anyway).

Ok thanks I really appreciate the input I have some thinking to do now.

I knew that the factory ammo supply was short for the WLV but I handload so I didn’t really consider this a huge factor.
If you reload, and REALLY want to have some fun with performance and capibility, think about a 6mm wildcat version of the 6.8 SPC (6DTI, 6PDK, 6SPC/6x6.8,6TAC). In my opinion, the 6.8's case is BEGGING for a 90-105 grain 6mm pill. I just so happened to reload for one and shooting 90 grain Berger/87 grain Hornady at 3000+ FPS is a hoot!

Who’s barrel do you use for your 6.8 and do you have a 6.8 spc or a 6.8 spc 2?

There really are not any 6.8 SPC ANYTHING around in regards to barrels for ARs. I use AR Performance Barrels but have also had good luck with Bison (I have an 8.5" bison I use for pistol deer season in MN). Are you building ground up or looking for complete upper? This is my fave for a 16" hunting barrel https://www.ar15performance.com/inc/sdetail/38010/27237 Here it is in a complete upper with a 3R barrel http://www.blackstonearms.com/6-8-16-Scout-Upper-p/68sctuprbgt.htm

I am going to be building an upper I have a stripped upper and a hand guard as well as an upper hardware kit so I figured I would just build it and use the parts I have .

Where abouts are you? I have a suppressed 12” 6.8 SBR that you need to try out. :D

I love my 18" Bison Armory 6.8SPC. Wickedly accurate & hits hard. That said, I've thought hard about getting a .277WLV barrel for my 10" .300BLK & switching over. I think it's a better round than the .300BLK for supersonics & I'm not sure I'll ever actually buy a can for it & do the 'Whisper' thing.

If the OP reloads, 6.8 vs. .277 is a wash, though commercial 6.8 is readily available & not too outrageously price. .277 would be cheaper, if starting from scratch, due to 1x 5.56 brass being MUCH cheaper than new 6.8 brass. Another consideration is that the 6.8 also requires different mags..

I really, really like the 6.8, but the .277 ain't no slouch.

The 6.8 just doesn’t have that wth is that factor lol

Then do one of the 6mm wildcats and give it your own name. “Whatcha shootin’ der?” “Oh, ya know, da 243 Titan. What, ya haven’t heard ‘bout dat? All the PRC guys be shootin’ dat too. Where ya been, ya yooper!”
