Okay….
I’m down to the short and curlies.
I am looking at a ‘17 F150 SuperCrew 4x4 on Monday. It has the 3.5 EcoBoost in it.

Yea or nay? Should I try to find the 5.0 instead?

I had the first version of the ecoboost and every time I tried pulling my camper it went into limp mode. But I think they have fixed a lot of those issues.

My mechanic, who was the shop boss at Lafayette Ford for many years, said post-2014 motors had the kinks worked out.

So, the dealership I’m going to on Monday has a ‘20 F150 with the 5.0 Coyote motor. It’s 3 mpg less for fuel efficiency, but it’s 3 years newer and 45,000 less miles on it for 5,000.00 more.

So:
2017, 3.5, 55k miles, $44,900.00

-vs-

2020, 5.0, 9k miles, $49,900.00

These decisions suck…..[emoji37]

If you can pony up the money the 2020 would be worth it imo.

2020

Nothing wrong with the 3.5 but the newer year truck is better for lower miles and minimal extra investment.

That’s no decision in my book. Go newer, you’ll be better off in the long run.

I’ve heard that the better 5.0 motors were pre-2018, before the plasma coating in the cylinders. Anybody have any experience with this?

My wife has a 2013 Ford Explorer Sport we bought new as a company car back in '13. It has 130,000 trouble free miles on it. We were planning on trading it in for a new one but then this crazy inflation started so we're holding off on getting a new vehicle. LET'S GO BRANDON!!

How much would a comparable brand new one cost?

Irrelevant since you can't find one.

That seems like new truck prices for both of those used models

That's true, except that in this brave new world FJB has built new vehicles are rare as hen's teeth and stupid expensive.

Well, there are some XL and XLT plain Jane trucks around. But the King Ranch and Platinum trucks?? Forget about it…..

I'd go with the 20' 5.0 coyote. The gen 3 coyote motors are impressive. The 10 speed transmission is great.
I have a 19' 5.0 and dad has a 18' 5.0. No oil consumption issues from either. These trucks hold 9 quarts of oil. Ford has been using Plasma Transfer Wire Arc cylinder lining for over a decade.

Those 3.5 vs 5.0 mpg numbers will be a wash in real world driving.
A co-worker has a 3.5 that has around 150k trouble free miles. I just like the V8 sound and less moving parts / maintenance.

The 3.5’s are decent motors. Haven’t had to do much to them besides the occasional turbo replacement.

I like that the water pump is externally accessible on the truck engines. Same motor mounted transversely in a car has a internal chain driven pump that requires the motor to be pulled to changed. Can’t tell you how many fusions I’ve dropped the subframe motor/trans on right at 100k miles just for a water pump. 14+ hours it calls for although I can do it in half that time now.

About what does the turbo replacement cost?

I think I’m definitely leaning toward the coyote 5.0. As you said, the 3 mpg difference won’t mean that much, and the 10 speed transmission will definitely come in handy when it will have a trailer behind it. Not very often, but occasionally. Pretty sure it’s gonna be a crew truck. I love my ‘00 Excursion, but the main crew truck dropped a cylinder at 407,000 miles, so it’s time for a replacement truck

So this happened last week…..
2022 F150 STX 4x4 with the 5.0 Coyote motor/10 speed transmission. Been driving it all weekend and getting 17ish MPG. Much better than the 10-12 I’ve been accustomed to.

I was looking at a ‘17 F150 Lariat with the 3.5 EB motor and 57K miles for $45K. With rebates, discounts, etc., this one was OTD for just a bit over $48k….with 110 miles on it! Turning it over to my guys tomorrow. Pretty sure they’ll like it.
