Cool story. I actually want to try my hand at something similar on the land, since I've got a lot of fairly steep slopes covered in trees with nice strong root systems holding it all together. My plan was to dig into the hill and gradually insert a piece of large diameter culvert to shore it up while I went deeper.

interacting with (non-familial) humans nowadays should drive you to want to live in a bunker.

I wonder if there is a good cost breakdown for this type of project?

EDIT: One time I figured the most cost-effective way would be to have the biggest concrete septic tank imaginable installed professionally... but then tell them not to hook it up and proceed to modify it. Stupid idea? Probably.

    update to 17 years.....

"The 63-year old, named Song Jiang by the police,
had been jailed for trafficking women and children
but escaped from a prison camp in 2002.
He had been living in a tiny cave
cut off from human interaction for years."
