Just bought and picked up the 30-40 K-J that was listed on the forum for $450. Went ahead and paid the asking price, was blind as a bat as to what I was actually buying, but man I'm glad I did! I just got home, put a little oil on the stock, wiped the barrel, receiver, etc down with a rag treated with some Ballistol and gave the bore a good scrub. The furniture is gorgeous, the bore is bright with great rifleing and the barrel/receiver are excellent with a subtle patina, but no pitting. The trap door magazine is extremely stiff (a good thing I would guess) and snaps both open and closed with authority. The bolt feels like it is on ball bearings its so incredibly smooth! I'm ecstatic and yes, I do believe that this was worth $450! Whether it was or wasn't is something I'm not going to do too much digging to find out.

Great find! The Krag was well known for being one of the smoothest bolt guns ever made. Ammo is about at 30/30 power levels. If you're planning on shooting it, don't go looking for power in the 308/3006 range as the action can't handle it.

I appreciate the advice and, nope, I didn't buy this one for power, just the history. I'll be as gentle as I can if I ever get around to shooting it that is.
Thanks again for chiming in, I honestly bought this on a whim and prayer!

Nice score and she's a beauty. I'm been pining for a Krag for a couple years now. Should have bought one when CMP was selling them cheap!

I have a .308 handload for 220 gr SPRN that mimics the Krag. The KJ was used in Africa even on elephants - it's no slouch with those massive slugs even at modest velocity. And action machined like a jewel.

What the hell man!?!

From Whim to Why is all I can say. I'll do nothing with this and that's sort of a shame. If I get an "I'll take it" today, great, if not, I'm not going to try to peddle it too awfully hard. I do however, appreciate the "passion" in your question.

There is absolutely no arguing that! The figuring in the wood they used for the stock is worth the price of admission in my opinion - humble as it is.

Not asking to sound rude at all, just curious how did you go from being excited and happy with your purchase to less than 12 hours later wanting to resell?

No worries and fair question: I was simply in the mood to do some dealin' yesterday and this was the most compelling thing to come along, hence, "Whim". I am still absolutely excited and happy with it, but simply know I'll never use it - hence the "Why?" Simply put, sometimes I just get a bug up my a** to try and/or experience something different. There are things that I buy that I know for darn sure I'll keep, then there are others that are "cheap" enough to just grab knowing if I don't want to keep it, I'll get my money back out of it - or close.

I inherited a 30-40 Krag from my father last fall. He purchased it from a Pawn Shop after learning his HS friend had it on loan there. My Dad paid out to get it released from Pawn for $250.00.

Of course sporterized at some point the rifle was used for years deer hunting in Western PA. by the sellers father.
