This article was very useful to me in development of my 20" bbl 175gr loading.
I developed it specifically for use with the Ziess Z 1000 reticle which uses 2650fps as it's constant.

The drop in velocity could be quite significant at longer ranges especially when you factor in the wind. I need to play around with one of the calculators and enter their data and see the impact of that lower muzzle velocity on the bullet at 900 or 1,000 yards.

Good Stuff!

If I need to hump around a 24" or longer bbl it wont be a .308 in the first place.
My full size hunting rig is a 24" .300 Mag - the .308 is a carbine length for shorter ranges.

Sold my 7mag A-bolt with 26" bbl - the velocity king but just too long for practical field use. Beautiful gun tho.

26" bbl 308 + suppressor is just too unwieldy.
I found the magic dust for 2650 from a 20" bbl but it's sticky bolt city on hot summer days.
IMR4064 sounds like capt crunch but it does the job.
Varget wouldn't do it safely.

This is a great article. I built my AR-10 with a 16" BBL as a night time hunting and defensive weapon. I never expect to shoot over 500y with it. I have a 24" BBL AR10 if I ever want to play with 1000y.
