If it had a manly name like Hurricane Bubba or something, maybe people would have taken it more seriously.
Anyhoo, I found out I could backfeed the house with a 1400 watt generator and run two refrigerators, a freezer, and a half dozen lights for 14 days. I was on Statesville city gas, water and sewer at the time, so it was pretty smooth sailing. Trees and powerlines down everywhere, but no damage to chez-Aardvark, a ca.1916 2-story frame house.
I saved newspapers chronicling Hugo and put them inside one of the staircase newel posts (along with other mementos including a 1916 election-eve local newspaper we had found in the house above the flower-cellar ceiling), hoping someone would appreciate finding our little time-capsule someday.
