Im thinking about a new rifle can and......im lookin at a thunderbeast ultra 9 but would a .338 can be slightly quieter due to the extra volume? The .308 cans seem to be 1.5 inches in diameter and the .338 cans are about 1.8 inches..... Seems like it would be a noticeable difference.

It would likely be louder (due to larger exit aperture size), heavier, and more expensive.

If you look at tests of 5.56 rifles with 7.62 cans, they’re slightly louder than the matching 5.56 suppressor with same ammo, barrel length, etc

I'd bet it would be quieter as .308 is a lot closer to .338 that 5.56 is to 7.62.

It's usually a tradeoff of louder due to bigger bore and quieter due to increased volume...but the increased volume often results in a lower tone which most people find more pleasant.

I think the tradeoff of +/- would be in your favor with the 338/308. But I do agree you'd definitely have to decide if the extra weight and cost is worth it...as I'm not sure the suppression difference would be something you'd notice. It's either still going to be loud due to sonic crack, or a similar level of quiet with subsonic ammo.

Testing all the Ultra versions on 300WM not 308 but Ray has some great videos on YT.

The difference between TBAC’s 338BA and LARGEST .30 cal can (Ultra 9) is 1.5” in length, .3” in diameter and 8oz in weight. The differences are even more extreme with the Ultra 7 and 5.

The videos I saw were different so there wasn’t consistency with temperature, rifle (Both were Rem 700s but barrel length wasn’t listed) ammo (the unsuppressed decibel readings were different by 3dB average) , etc, so this may not mean anything but the 338 can was 4dB quieter than the dedicated 308 can (134 to 138dB).....to me is not worth the massive increase in size and weight

Its worth considering.....i dont mind extra size or weight, just so it isnt ridiculous. I just want 1 rifle can for bolt guns...... 4 decibels isnt a deal breaker but it was noticable.

But man.....neither one of them are cheap!

The Silencerco Harvester Bog bore is a good choice also and a good deal cheaper, If you are local to us and wanted to come by
to look at the 338 Ultra in person to compare to the Ultra 9 just let us know.

I absolutely love the big bore harvester! Had it on a 6.5 creedmoor bolt rifle and much quieter than i expected (given the bore size difference) and much notcice in reduced recoil. No excuse to flinch! Thanks for the recommenation guys! And you too Scott @TARHEELSTATE
