In 1985 we traveled to South Africa and Zimbabwe to visit a friend of mine who had been an exchange student at my high school 13 years earlier. We visited her and her husband in Joburg and were passed to her parents in Pietermaritzburg for more visiting. It was grand! We also went to Durban, Pretoria, Capetown, Kruger, and in Zimbabwe to Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.
We traveled to Kruger with a husband and wife who had driven from England to South Africa in the 60s and never went home. We stayed in Kruger for several days.
One of those days we stopped to watch some elephants tearing a tree apart to get at branches. The wife who was driving commented that one of them was in a really bad mood and about that time one of our party stuck a camera lens big enough to look like a grenade launcher out the window and clicked the shutter. As soon as he heard the click, jumbo threw his head toward us and started at a fast trot headed our way.
The driver put the vehicle in reverse and started backwards saying that he'd give up shortly and it was a bluff. He picked up speed and she floored it. I thought she was going to roll the van, it was screaming backwards and weaving all over the road.
The elephant stopped after what seemed like forever and we stopped too but he kept pushing us backwards in short rushes so our driver finally turned around. She was shaking so badly she could barely drive.
We jokingly accused the couple of arranging the show with the elephant to scare us Americans, they told us to f off and there wasn't anything funny about that!
