I feel that when a person first starts their path to firearm ownership that guns are like golf clubs, there are ones for specific tasks that needs to be handled.
1. Role: EDC - A dependable every day carry pistol of a size they will consistently carry, and a caliber they are confident in to do the job.
2. Role: Target - A .22 plinker for piddling about and popping cans and teaching new shooters
3. Role: Historic - A 1911, of any make/model that sends a shiver up their leg. We are Americans...we all should be issued one when we graduate kindergarten.
4. Role: Home Defense - A pistol with a capacity >14 of a caliber greater than .380ACP that is their bedside/bump in the night/I have to get to my rifle gun. This >can< be the same as #1.
5. Role: Familiarity - A single or double action revolver. They exist out there, and we need to be capable of using them. Simple as they may seem, knowing how to load, unload, and shoot both single/double action is useful.
Now, with my list, some things overlap....an EDC can be a Home Defense, and a .22 plinker may also be your single or double action. My point being a fella has to be able to respond to any situation he may face face...invited to a competition? Grab that home defense since it has the capacity. Taking a kid to the range for the first time? Grab the .22 plinker. Have to answer a bump in the night? Grab that +14 round gun beside your bed. Invited to shoot a friends nice new Colt SAA? Good thing you know how one works because you have a revolver at home.
