50 B&M Alaskan Die set

Unbelievable articles here on this cartridge but who are the dies available from? Finally ready to go down the path of building one.
Currently I do not have any dies on hand for the 50 B&M Alaskan. But I believe SSK has sets on hand for folks building the rifles. Barrels are taking a long time to get right now.

Got it. Have a couple unrelated items shipping back from Brian in the next couple of weeks so hopefully he has a set and can toss it in the box. Thanks

Well Brian can send dies and rifle at the same time........... What donor rifle did you choose?

Yeah, Kinda partial to those myself.............This last pair I did were matching rifle/carbine and Serial Numbers....... Was so excited about getting them, both Brian and I made the mistake of not installing the recoil pads. Don't make that mistake, I had to send them back to Brian to get it done.......LOL, but not before taking these photos.........

I have 3 other guns that all have the XS Ghost ring sights and forward rail mount, this is the best Iron Sight Option in my opinion, Brian had to build a small bridge across the receiver to get the height needed in the rear.......

But, I also believe that NECG makes a Ghost Ring blade that fits in the rear sights as well? But I have not explored that........

Excitement is building as Brian at SSK said the 50 B&M will be shipping in the next couple of weeks. Let the powder burning begin.
You may very well be one of the last for anything coming from SSK. You do know, last fall that David Fricke, new owner of SSK, decided SSK will no longer build custom rifles........
I think you are going to be very fortunate. Brian and I had hopes that this might change over the summer, but so far there has been no word on it....... at least that I am aware of.

Do you have everything you need to get started?

I was relayed the same information this is it. I wanted an octagon but was told we had to change the barrel to round due to timing as this was the last of the customs. Anything that was going to stretch out past a certain date the custom order would be cancelled. Have a mix of plinker bullets, last set of SSk's dies, and 100 new Starline cases. Just hope it shows up with the recoil pad (I reiterated that after your story). Thanks

Check on that before it leaves, or send email or something.... you will want recoil pad........ not a big deal to remind Brian before it leaves.........

Keep us posted, and when it gets here send photos.............

Good call on checking for the recoil pad. They no longer have the equipment to do it. Will get to enjoy the true recoil and then have one fitted later.

I have not spoke to Brian in several months now....... looks like nothing is getting better, I have not heard anything good coming out of there....... Gone to crap I think. I am sure that Brian will do his best on your rifle, B&M always got top priority, as long as Fricke was not involved in any way......... Good god, can't even get a recoil pad on.......... that is pathetic.

Well, if you have IMR 4198 you can use 40/IMR 4198 with any conventional 300-500 gr bullet, they will all do 1200-1300 fps and will all be in the same hole at 50 yards, and those don't have any recoil......... And actually many of them work very well at that velocity, in particular 500 gr Hornady and 400 gr Sierra, I think I was told the 500 Hornady was discontinued, that is sad as well, that is an excellent bullet from 1200 -1800 fps......

I have all the reamers in hand, if anyone ever wants to build and has someone that can do it, happy to loan them out....................

Hey Michael, didn't you make a few early on out of Marlin Guide guns?? It seems I remember shooting one of them years back at Teds.

Yep..........There were several Guide Guns......... I don't have any of those any longer, the one Marlin I have has the pistol grip stock, it was the one that Layne Simpson liked so good.

I remember shooting your 50cal Guide gun, I also shot one of your 458s, I think that was a Winchester. I still got my old Guide Gun, I have one of the old blued ones with the ported barrel. I also have a handfull of some of the 500gr hard cast loads you put together for it, and some other random cartridges you put together for it.

Loaded up some Sierra 400 FPs over 50gr of 4198 from the data you shared. Looks like that was a good mid-range load. Gun shows up tomorrow and will take it out Saturday. Can't wait and thanks for the guidance on the project.

Yes, that will be a very pleasant load, around 1700 fps and probably only 30000 PSI. 62/IMR 4198 only gives 40000 PSI, and 2050 fps, and that is upper end of what that bullet can do terminally before coming apart, at 1700 fps it will be much better from a terminal standpoint.... and easy to shoot, fun.......... The next step down would be 40/IMR 4198 for 1300 fps...... and that is powder puff loads.... and lots of fun too...........

Very happy to hear the gun is on the way............ When you get it, shoot it, REPORT BACK Here.......... and let us know how it goes...........

You were spot on with the velocity. 1667fps with 50gr of IMR 4198 with the 400gr Sierras. Loaded up some 400gr cast at 1200fps which were more pleasant with the absence of a recoil pad. Took 4 rounds to sight in a 50yds with the NECG sights. It is going to be a fun one.
