7.62x39 AR question

I'm a fan of the 7.62 AR. Some you get run like crap but ultimately you might have to buy an adjustable gas block or different buffer/springs.

I’ve got a few of them. My latest build was a 10.5” pistol I’ve taken to BatteryOaks a few times to sight in my red dot and just to play with it. I enjoy it

Cons:
You have to spend money.

Pros:
Somewhat affordable ammo.
Wide variety of ammo.
Proven caliber for plinking, hunting, and defense.
Fun to shoot.
And you will have another gun (which is reason enough) 😁

Would not hurt to have an extra bolt and 2 or so extractors.

I built 1 using a Bear Creek barrel and BCG. It works fines. I use it for deer and hog hunting. Reliable and accurate. Ammo is still quite affordable.
Got the BC complete upper, they use an enhanced firing pin and improved extractor with their bcg.
I run it in a PSA lower with Magpul magazines., steel targets not hunting.

The biggest issues is 7.62x39 not liking a stanag magwell. Some ak mag guns do exist though. A standard ar15 bolt is fairly thin on the walls in 7.62x39 but some guns also use bigger bolts

only thing I'd add is that when the Soviets moved to shorter-barreled carbines, they also moved down to the 5.45 cartridge. Ergo, if you're looking for something that's legally pistol-length, I'd consider looking in 5.56 or 5.45 (although the latter is hard to find).

What are you considering “legally pistol-length”?

Pros: You dont have to be an AK aficionado

Here’s my latest with a brace

FWIW, I bought a BCA upper and a PSA lower for under $400 when on sale. I heard all the horror stories about extractors bolts cycling etc. Mine runs like a top with both steel cased ammo and brass! So far, I have shot several hundred rounds of mostly steel cased cheap ammo and some of my brass reloads. I was surprised at the accuracy. It shoots 2MOA at 100 yards with the steel case ammo. I haven't tried my reloads with good brass and bullets at 100 yards, but I think I might get some 1 inch groups with the right stuff.

Why not an ak though
Having owned/shot/tinkered with both, the AR is the inherently more accurate platform BUT the AK is the inherently more reliable. That said, get the gas pressures right with the correct buffer and an AR will run while the AK is like the naughty kid who likes mud puddles just because. Other reasons are stricly ergonomic, like scope mounts, etc and that is AR territory.

In terms of practical accuracy, you can only make a legitimate accuracy comparison if you use US commercial manufacture or you handload. I've found overseas AK ammo to be ok, but not match grade. Pull apart some combloc milsurp if you want a real eyeopener on poor quality control.

So AR v AK? Meh, why not have both?

7.62x39 AR is waste of time. Extractor and bolt lugs are thin and fragile. Magazines do not well accommodate the extreme taper of the cartridge case. If you want a fun rifle in 7.62x39 checkout the Ruger american ranch. It uses mini 30 mags that are designed for the cartridge. Mine shoots incredibly well and is excellent suppressor host. Just throwing it out there. We all get the 7.62x39 AR desire at some point. Go ahead and build one if the itch needs to be scratched.

I have a PSA KS47 and it has become my favorite AR to shoot. Once I got the upgraded extractor, I haven’t had any issues with it and I shoot this thing quite a bit. With the exception of Norma ammo, it eats everything I put through it, primarily suppressed.

I like it because the ammo is cheap, .30 cal still hits pretty hard even out of a 10.5in barrel, and I much prefer the ergonomics of the AR platform over and AK. Optic mounting is easier too.

What can are you using on it?

That’s a YHM Resonator K. It’s my only .30cal can so far.
Just got my Dead Air Sandman S out of jail. Can’t wait to try it with 7.62x39. Going to mount it on my Ruger American Ranch first. Then on to the KS-47.

I think you’ll be pleased with it, the KS47 seems to suppress very well. Although it won’t reliably feed sub sonic loads.

Good deal. I’ve got .300 blk out for suppressed if needed. I’m stoked about the KS-47.

What barrel length do you have? I’m waiting on a 10.5.

I did the BCA upper and PSA lower thing as well. Aside from some Chinese ammo that wouldn't go bang, I have had zero malfunctions. ASC mags work great, but they're a little pricey.

i gave thought to a ruger ranch but its bolt and i wanted semi auto

no doubt the rifles that use an AK mag is step in right direction. however theyre still dealing with the weakened bolt and extractor issue. the CMMK mk47 gets around this with a beefy LR-308 style bolt. however theyre silly expensive rifles. As noted above, if I want a reliable 7.62x39 autoloader it has to be an AK. if I want a headache Id build another 7.62x39 AR.

it seems like 95% of these threads (regardless of forum) is an individual with reservations about a specific build but seeking affirmation that said problems dont exist. I am unaware of a more problematic chambering for an AR.
