Looking for some defensive stuff and I really only have ever bought XM193. - What defensive rounds are you all stacking for your pistols/SBRs?

Norma had their 77 gr Golden Target on sale last week and I ordered 200 to try out.
Just looked and I don't see it listed, so don't know if it is new or end of production.

Ordered a couple hundred last week too šŸ˜Ž

Shows in stock

Most of my home defense rounds for <14.5ā€ barrels include:
-Federal MSR 62 grain bonded (pretty much Speer gold dot)
-Hornady 75 grain in either Black, Steel Match, TAP
-77 grain IMI, Black Hills, Magtech CBC
-many swear by the Barnes TSX 50 gr

This isn't the Norma stuff that's gonna blow my hardware up, right? Lol

Out of curiosity, what was the price? That stuff looks to be $20/box now.

I nave not shot their 77 grain yet. Their 55 grain is GTG though.

Total w/ free shipping and tax was around $215 for 200 rounds.

Any experience with the Federal Urban TRU 55gr SP? - I was originally going for the 77gr, but this stuff looks pretty solid for the price.

I donā€™t. The Gold Dot and Hornady 75 grain T2 bullets have been popular for a while. Plus they arenā€™t as dependent on the velocity of XM193

Not sure the stuff is still around but Prvi 75gr OTM is my choice since I have a lot and it performs well in gel tests, considering itā€™s not a defensive load.

Most of the Speer 62, 64, 75, and 77gr loads will be very good. The bonded versions are better for barrier penetration.

I also have a bunch of russian 62gr HP. No clue if itā€™s really better than FMJ but figured itā€™s worth a shot for high volume stuff. Worst case, I shoot it up as range ammo since it only cost me like $5-10 more per case.

Thankfully there are a lot of options in 5.56.

I bought a bunch of the older version of Speer Gold Dot LE 64gr years back when PSA had it at a deal. Iā€™ve used it out of my 16ā€ carbine mainly and it knocks down feral pigs with ease. I did run some thru my old AR pistol and it worked fine but I didnā€™t try it on ferals. The one thing I did notice is in the 10.5ā€ pistol I had a bigger fireball and report. Other than that it functioned just fine.

For off the shelf defensive rounds the Hornady TAP line is a pretty good start for SBR specific loadings:

or this:

unfortunately, Hornady does not sell either of those bullets for reloading.

However, if you did want to reload your own consider the Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos monolithic. I run the 110gr in my 11.3" 300 HAM'R bedside pistol (@2350fps). You should be able to get the 62gr up to around 2500fps:

Another monolithic to consider would be the 55gr Raptor from Cutting Edge for maximum terminal ballistics:

Would you all recommend staying away from the 55gr defensive rounds out of an 11.5"?
I know some of us keep saying it but there is not such thing as a magic bullet. Use a reliable one that functions best in your firearm and place rounds in the proper places until the threat is ended ā€¦ be it one or ten rounds. The couple hundred fps you are gonna lose from the ā€œreportedā€ velocities manufacturers claim will affect how ballistic tips, soft points, etc perform but youā€™re still putting holes in the target and let fluids out. Do not over think it ā€¦ shoot good ammo that your firearm works best with if you ever are put in a bad situation.

Ya I wanted more but I'll hold off and see how they shoot. The sales seem to be pretty regular. First time using any 77gr. This classy guy typically runs Wolf.
I've got a couple rifles with 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrels, so one of them should shoot.

Norma 77 gr 223 chronoā€™s from my 22ā€ bolt gun w YHM turbo K at 2730 ft/s. considering barrel length is so-so WRT velocity. The Norma 77gr has a short COAL compared to most 77gr loads that are closer to max 2.260. I suspect Norma dropped the powder charge to avoid over-pressure from the deep bullet seat.

if looking for defensive ammo for SBR Iā€˜d personally go with a heavy good dot or federal soft point. They ensure expansion and are absolutely devastating.

I was having a very hard time finding SD stuff in 77gr. I figure this is at least better than running my training ammo for SD purposes; when I come across some better stuff I'll snag it.

I'd actually really like to snag more Wolf .223 SP - the stuff shoots extremely well. Groups better than PMC Bronze and does surprisingly well in gel tests for the cost. Don't expect to see it around anymore.

with a soft point Iā€™m not convinced velocity is nearly as critical. ive shot a bunch of federal TRU 55 gr SP and they expand just fine from a 14.5ā€. Iā€™ve not put them through my 11.5. Iā€™m just overall sold on soft points for .223 in general. Then again pretty much anything in 223 is absurdly effective on 2 legged threats.
